Newbie

Post by keeny »

Hi ive just bought into the peugeot 206 world... :)

So i have recently purchased 206 quicksilver for less than £100..

The catch is its a non runner, the last owner told me that the car died whilst on a journey & had to be recovered back to the home address. :hmm:

The RAC bloke told the owner it was the cylinder head gasket?

But i cant understand the gasket failing across all 4 cylinders, ive got 4 working spark plugs & petrol to the rail so i would of thought that i should get some kind of explosion at at least a couple of pistons.. or some rough tickover with plenty of smoke...something at least , but it just turns over with nothing happening.

There is a slight hint of oil in the expansion tank... this is all i know.. can anyone help :love-thx:

Pretty sure the quiksilver is a hatchback and 1.4 16v engine ... but that was an old brochure and things may have changed,

but google suggests same ... with 2.0 hdi as alternative.

Either way not much there that's similar to the CC!!

But sudden failure doesn't suggest headgasket .. can suggest cam belt ...

Hi all who replied..

So the car is on a 52 plate and has a 1.4 engine...manual gearbox with 118000 on the clock

I dont have any service history or reciepts for any work done...

i took the top cover off the cambelt cover and the belt is present and tight and all turns over normally when the enigne is turned over... im stumped at what it could be??

The car is 13 years old. I'd scrap it a buy a decent one. You also want the 206info forum not the one for the coupe convertible.

*ouch* Ron.

Check the crank trigger.
The oil in header tank does point to a head gasket problem, but as you say, it would normally run of sorts.
Is the engine (MIL) light on?
Cheers Col.

I apologise if my last post was a bit curt. I was only saying what I'd advise any of my kids. To repair it could cost as much as the car is worth and there are plenty of decent runners with long MOT's available cheaply which could save you trouble and expense. However, if you really want to learn and try to put it right yourself that's up to you.

If the RAC guy said it was head gasket then personally I'd check compressions on all 4 cylinders first off. That'll soon tell you whether any are down on what they should be.

Definite compression test, or get the water in the header checked for head gasket leak, a leak test I believe its called.

A compression test will not always show up a head gasket failure as it might have gone between the oil and waterway and not across the fire ring.
It should still run of sorts even if it had gone between cyls
