Sounds like the release bearing is starting to fail

I think I'm having the same problem, I've only just got my pug convertible. There is a whirring/grinding noise when the clutch is engaged. Would I be write in thinking it the release bearing?

Unlikely, if it was the release bearing you would get noise when the clutch is dis-engaged. i.e. when the clutch pedal is pushed down.

If you get noise with the clutch engaged it is more likely to be gearbox bearings.

Capncol knows all about gearboxes. When he comes on I'll bet he has something constructive to say.

No pressure then Ron? :hmm:

Just to confirm. Noisy with pedal up, quiet when down? Yes, or the otherway round?

You have a MA5 box which was used in various Citroen and Peugeot cars & vans in various guises:- Berlingo, xsara, C4, Partner, 106, 206, 306, etc: Check the code on the box (see my answers in the post below)

There is a more in-depth explanation here http://www.peugeot206cc.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=14944

I had a 205 like that. With the engine running and no-one in the car you could hear a rustle from the gearbox bearings. Dip the clutch and the noise disappeared. I never did anything about it. After many years my daughter had the car off me, ran it for a couple more years then sold it. The last I heard the car was still running ok.

It just depends how noisy it gets...
