206 1.9d engine cuts out

Post by fozzybear »

Hi, Could anyone help me please I have a 2002 206 1.9d for the past 4 days having problems starting car. engine turns over but if revs over 1500 rpm engine cuts out with oil can light and stop light on. then car will not start for about half an hour. then same problem again. sometimes the orange engine light comes on as well. then left car a couple of hours started ok ran for the rest of the day. the following day same problem. took car to 2 Peugeot dealers and they could not find any fault codes registered. have checked all earth connections and all sensor connections. oil level ok any suggestions would be grateful. as live in france. and mechanics here don't tell you much.

Thankyou Andy

Hi Andy and welcome.
The oil can light means low oil pressure. Does the engine sound noisy? (rattling) If so then you have a serious engine issue. It could, however, be the oil pressure sensor faulty.

When you say it cuts out and won't start for 1/2 hr, will it crank over, or does the engine not turn at all?
Cheers Col.

Hi Capncol thanks for the quick reply, the engine will turn over but not fire up however the coil light does not light up or the relay engage for post preheat. also no sound from injection pump (tapping sound). sometimes the airbag light comes on as well. weird

The engine sounds quiet when running. the only sensor disconnected is the egr valve sensor as egr valve clogged up.

I have ordered oil pressure sensor and oil temp sensor just in case.

many thanks

Andy

How old is the battery? You will get random electrical problems with a failing battery. Search this site for the many examples of this.

Capncol,

Not sure how old the battery is more than 2 years old as this is the length of time son has had the car. A little bit more history, changed all four preheat coils as car was difficult to start in morning with the bad spell of cold weather sometimes only starting on 2nd or 3rd turn of key. So will investigate battery. Have available battery from my 1999 ford escort estate diesel. only 9 months old. will read thread about failing battery.

Once again thankyou

Andy

I think the the glow plugs are a red herring. It won't stop the engine once running. If you are sure battery is OK wait till you have eliminated oil pressure sensor, after that try and get it on diagnosics and see if there are any codes stored.

Hi Capncol,

Changed Oil Pressure sensor, made no difference. Do you know what the 35amp green relay is for beneath engine bay fusebox, just for my info as not listed in Haynes manual or RTE (French equiv) in fact my French manual does not list a wiring diag for multiplexed model. So scratching my head, do I plunge in and buy Lexia 3 as works out cheaper than putting car in garage for diag's if lexia 3 will work this car.

many thanks for your help

Andy

I would - it should do.
Even if you only use it a couple of times then resell it, it should pay for itself.

I haven't got a wiring diagram for the diesels to hand, so not sure about that relay. Next stage is diagnostics really. Lexia is for Citroens and PP2000 is for Peugeots, and it needs a windows XP platform to run, either directly or through VM sofware. I will try and find wiring diagrams later but may take me til after the weekend.

Hi Just an update, Peugeot Planet is unable to communicate with ECU. Does anyone know which pinouts to check for voltage. etc...
