Anti Pollution problem - FIXED! This might help you!!

Post by han18 »

Hi everyone,

From pretty much day one I had the anti pollution fault come up on my car. The car would beep, go into limp mode and the engine management light would be on. I got stuck in a busy city once because this happened and the car was refusing to start up properly again - the accelerator pedal wasn't responding. After two hours it started again and the fault was gone....
A tank of BP ultimate usually did the trick for a few weeks as well.

This has been an on/off occurence which is why I felt like it wasn't serious. Surely if it was a serious fault it would be on all the time? One time it had been on for 3 days and the car was actually revving by itself. Apparently this is because the car is trying to get rid of any dirt in the tank or something. It's like a self-cure. However this was REALLY scary because even when I took my feet off all pedals the car still moved by itself and showed no signs of slowing down like you would expect it to if you weren't on the accelerator pedal. :( I had it booked into the garage and the morning of the job the light and fault had gone. This particular garage said there wasn't much point me bringing it in because if the fault was 'gone' they wouldn't know when they had fixed it. :hmm: (I don't go there anymore btw)

Anyway, after over a year of this on off stupid problem, my car decided to do it on a REALLY busy 5 exit 60mph road roundabout. The car stopped on the actual roundabout. We couldn't get it to move as the accelerator wasn't responding again. Then after a few start ups it was revving by itself. Rang breakdown people through my insurance and they came and rescued us. Got it taken to the same garage that did my cambelt.

Plugged into a diagnostic machine thing.
Two fault codes came up - P0221 and P0226. The garage called Peugeot directly and the fault codes are so common they could tell them instantly without having to look anywhere what they were.
Both of these codes are related to a faulty throttle position sensor. The garage removed the sensor and replaced it with a new one and then reset the throttle cable. It was THAT simple!

The fault has been gone for nearly 2 weeks now and I am SO happy. All in all it cost £231.88 so it wasn't too bad. At least I can breathe now :D

Glad you've sorted it. Just shows how important it can be to get the fault codes read. Capncol is always reminding people of this.

Thank you for the feedback - it may well help someone else.

Yes very important. Don't want people to let it go I for as long as I did, could have easily had an accident!!

Those codes mean you had 2 TPS tracks down. Not surprised you had an erratic throttle.

ps There is no throttle cable to reset. They would have calibrated new TPS. ;)

Can anyone tell me the location of the TPS on a 2.0 petrol engine?

I'm kind of having same problem, mine slugs along misfiring but next day can be fine. I have the Aa and a garage use the dignoisis fault machines and it always comes up with error po24 I've had the fuel injector changed as apparently was the problem. Car was fine for 50 miles until I filled up with petrol again. I have just put 1/4 tank of the more expensive unleaded in. Since the error code is po24 I don't know what else to do! I'm taking it back to the garage who said it could be something else but since I've just paid out £140 for fuel injector and it turns out to be something else after all, is that the garages problem? I'm fed up with throwing money at this car and its still not fixed!

No idea what po24 error code means, but try not to give up on the Pug. I've had mine since January 2012 and have spent well over £3000 on it on repairs but I still love her. It will get fixed. Ask the garage about the lambda sensor and get them to have a look and see if it needs sorting.
