I've just cleaned the blood off...

Post by coolasacucumber »

My sore hands!! I have a fresh plaster, lovingly administered by my wife, after a wonderfully fun afternoon of changing some bulbs in the dash controls.

Had the car less than a week, but decided that we didn't want to live with a few lights being out on the dash.

We had 2 in the multi function display gone, leaving it readable but not looking good, and 2 gone in the heater controls, meaning we could see the temperature at night, but not where it was blowing!

What a game of two halves...

The 2 bulbs in the MFD are easy peasy to change, the top cover simply 'pops' off, leaving 2 torx screws to undo, then the MFD unit comes away, and the bulb holders twist and turn out of the back.

Alas, the heater control is no such quick task!

The stereo has to completely come out.
The front cover of the dash comes out (2 torx screws at the top, then a few clips - be careful!)
4 torx screws hold the heater unit in place.
You can then twist the unoit around whilst still in the dash, and view the rear. At this point Peugeot have cruelly teased us, as it looks like you can remove the bulbs with the unit in place. Ohhhh Noooooo you can't!!

The heater controls have to be very very carefully taken out (then look for the clips which WILL have pinged off and flew into some crevice of the car...) Then take the ISO connector out.

The unit will then with some jiggery come free of the dash. Next job is to open it up, which looks like it should be easy, but again, nope! Slowly prize the clips open, then wedge it open with a screwdriver whilst doing the rest.

That reveals the bulbs, which can then be changed, if you can get them out of the holders that are in the circuit board!!! I ended up using a rubber glove and a pair of pliers - WARNING - be very very very gentle, as if the bulb breaks whilst in the holder, I can't imagine how it would then come out

It was pretty much dark by this point, so putting it all back together was a nightmare! As I started, I glimpsed a red smear on the white heater control cable, then looked at my hand, which was pumping blood out of my little finger!!

The rest of the re-fit was carried out with a dirty cloth wrapped around it, which added to the difficulty, as you can imagine.

Just as I was finishing, the economy mode flashed on as I was using the interior light, so now I'm going to have to follow the Handbook's advice and take it on a run to charge the battery up!

I'm really pleased with the results, a fully lit up dashboard, but if one goes again, I'd question whether to replace it, or just live with it!

One little question, and it probably sounds a little strange:-

On the heater unit, the selecter slider for re-circulated air or fresh, there are 2 images of the car, one for interior, one exterior.

Should they be as bright as each other with the lights on?

All of the bulbs are working, but the one on the left is brighter.

Answers on a post card please!!

I think they should be the same. I'll check ours when we're next out in it if I remember.

They are indeed the same, I replaced all the bulbs a few months ago and did a write up for people, no photos though. It's a simple job to replace all and should take no more than 30 mins.

If you go to a Peugeot dealer they will sell you all the bulbs and holders if you need for a good price. I paid £8 for 5 bulbs and 5 holders (just in case). They have a box of them in stock.

Not bad, though i managed to get 6 bulbs and holders from my local car parts shop for 4.75 bargain.
and the re-circulated air switch on my car... the left image is slightly brighter than the right though im assuming its because i only changed two of the bulbs inside the heater control the central one and the one that illuminates the dial for air direction the one on the right is an old bulb and probably dirty.
i probably should of done all 3 but if its not broke dont fix it etc...

AndyR - that could well be the case with mine. I did think about replacing them all, but should at least have tried to clean the working bulb. I'm not sure I can face the whole procedure again just to clean a bulb!!

Simple you say Edmund? My little finger would disagree with you sir!

Next up is to replace the rear fog lamp, new unit bought from the scrap yard today, I'll probably tackle that tomorrow, snow depending...

i personally also had a nightmare replacing the bulbs, what done me in was re-attaching some of the wires and the clips which hold them in place ive got the hands of a gorilla and i found that it didnt help much, wheres sigourney weaver when you need her?
The job itself isnt particularly mentally taxing just id liken it to threading a needle whilst drunk.
