Cuuting out when deccellerating

Post by Cassi »

Hi
My 206cc, 1600 05reg keeps intermittently cutting out when I slow down. I lose the power steering as the car stalls. It jumps back easily, and will then run as normal. I travel 20+ miles to work every day and can go 3 weeks with no problems, then another journey it'll happen every time I slow down.
The air bag malfunction warning will sometimes come on, and last week the anti pollution warning.
It's serviced regularly and has recently had new clutch and exhaust. The garage did a thorough check each time but could find nothing wrong. When I got the anti pollutin warning I decided to take it to a Peugeot main dealer for a diagnostic check. They have suggested new fuse box, earthing wire and battery total cost in region of £500. But have said they can't guarantee this will fix it.
Any suggestions? PLEASE!!!! :(

Hi Cassi and welcome.
Did Peugeot give you a print out of the diagnostics? If you have please post up the "P" codes from it and it will shed more light on it.
Their solution seems a bit drastic!
Without the P codes, I would hazard a guess at the throttle body sticking intermittantly. It's worth getting one from a scrapyard for about £30 to try. It's held on by 3 bolts and there is a hose and a plug to remove. You also need to calibrate it (I can tell you how if you decide to go down that route)
Cheers Col.

Thanks for quick response.
I haven't picked car up yet, only phoned this morning. Thought I'd see what people thought first in case they agreed with dealer. I'm picking it up this aft and will ask for print out. Will get back to you later.

Hi again
Well. I got my car back!
Engine ECU. Fault reading. Permanent fault. Intake manifold pressure sensor signal. Coherence.
Airbag ECU. Fault reading. Intermittent fault. Passenger's airbag deactivation. Remote intermittent fault. VAN network. Remote intermittent fault. Inhibition warning light. Remote intermittent fault. General warning light.
Advice list says:- engine fuse box £256.19, battery £97.20, earth lead £95.52, further investigation after part replaced £78.00
Does any of this mean anything to you?

Right Cassi.
What they are saying is they want to take a large bite out of your purse, and if that doesn't fix it they then want to charge you £78 (per hour I would guess) to continue guessing, sorry, diagnosing your faults.
The 1st thing to do is put a new battery on as I assume it's the original and will be passed it's best. You also have a mixed bag of unrelated faults which is common with a duff battery.
(Have a troll through the forums here and see how many "faults" are attributed to failing batteries)
Get one from an independent, and make sure it's for a 206CC, not just a 206 as they are different. Expect to pay £50-£60 for one. PLEASE READ THE BATTERY DISCONNECTION METHOD ON THIS FORUM
If that doesn't completely sort it next thing is a MAP sensor (about £30 from autofactor)

Unfortunately, these "modern" mechanics see the list of faults and want to change everything in one go instead of actually checking what the diagnostic machine is saying is, in fact the cause of the problem.

Change one thing at a time. If you have someone who is a reasonable DIYer we can guide you through.
Cheers Col.

... and £78 everytime you take it back for something else when the first list doesn't solve it all ...

Depending where you live, there are 206 owners out there with a diagnostic system called PeugeotPlanet who would be willing to check out you can and read the error codes, etc. and for a LOT LESS that a dealer. Plus they won't try to rip you off like a garage who's there to make money. They only charge to try and recoup some of the cost as the cabling is expensive (I know, I've had to buy them!).

So once you have changed the battery, you might want to run a few google searches, although I'd suggest starting on the http://www.peugeotforums.com/forums/det ... area-6106/ sites.

Drop me a PM if you get stuck and I'll try and help!

Good call Capn. Not many owners recognise the early warning signs of a failing 7 year old battery. Seems that Peugeot dealers don't either. Well done. Cheapest place for a 206cc battery is usually the main dealer - odd but true. (Not in the case of this dealer though - which dealer does Cassi go to? Sounds like one to avoid)
