206 2.0 Rear Brake Discs & Pads Help.

Post by tommythemechanic »

Hi,
My girlfriends car was left for 5 months on the drive SORN. She took it for mot and it failed on 7% efficiency for handbrake.

The front discs cleaned up fine after braking, but the rears didn't.

I decided to dismantle the brakes, fit new pads, was going to fit discs.

After dismantling the carrier from the caliper, i cleaned up with sandpaper the sliding bit at the bottom, that has a pin going through it, put new pads in, made sure the handbrake cable was moving freely too. When i removed the old pads I noticed the inner pad was worn unevenly, outside was thick and inside was thin.

The little bump on the back of the brake pad, is that meant to align with one of the slots on the piston when you wind it back? cos this wasnt and was in affect putting the pressure on only one half of the pad. When I came to do the other side, the pad with no notch was on the inside (with the piston) and seemed to be sitting alot better, but from what I understand the pad with the bump on is to go on the inside?

I thought I would change the discs, after removing the carrier, and the Torq screw, the disc was jammed on solid. Is the discs on these integral with the bearing? or does it just need hammering off the hub flange? so for now i cleaned up the discs that was on and now silver again :D

Any help would be appreciated regarding the notched on the brake pad and the discs.

As you said, the "pin" on the back of the pad lines up with the slot in the caliper piston. You will need to wind back the calipers when fitting new pads.
Some times the disc gets rusted to the hub, and a bit of brute force with a big copper mallet will shift it.

Got a pair of rear calipers here if you need them.
Cheers Col.

All done now.
thanks for the info.

Discs were just on the hub flange with a bit of rust, needed quite the hammer off lol. Pads now in properly, previous mechanic had put one side in with the lump on the outside, and on the other side put it on the inside but not in the slot so the pad was wonky and worn on one edge only.

Handbrake is now adjusted, didn't notice the little flap at the back the first time i looked to uncover a securing torq screw.

Thanks
