Reverse Not Engaged!!

Does anyone has the experience of engaging reverse in a manual car but find the car is actually in neutral!! This has happened to me a few times when parking already and got me scared, guess I've to use extra force to make sure it's in gear. Imagine obstacle in front backing up on a steep slope and the car's in neutral...
