Has anyone else had this experience?

I'm selling my CC (no this is not a sneaky ad - honest!) and as well as here, I advertised it on the web. Not much interest so far (ho hum!) except for an email from the 'Reverend David Richard' who claimed to be a Dutch Pastor and offered me £11,400 for the car.

I was a bit suspicious from the word go, but when he later suggested that his 'business associate' would send me a 'bankers cheque' for £14k, and when it had cleared I could refund him the difference and his 'associate' would collect the car I really smelled a rat. These sort of 'overpayment by rubber cheque’ scams are common in the US, where the banking system is not as integrated as ours.

I checked with my bank and they told me that it can take up to six months for a 'foreign' cheque to clear so if you only leave it a few weeks, before parting with the goods and the 'refund' you will be a bit sick when the 'payment' disappears from your account..

Just thought I’d warn everyone, and I did wonder if anyone else had had this scam tried on them?

Pretty widespread scam now with its variations, I see it mostly on eBay with sellers warding off bogus shippers wanting to pay rubber foreign cheques for cars in exchange for sellers arranging to pay the shipping fees (via untraceble Western Union telegraph payments of course). Seems as with the pishing of bogus internet banking adverts requesting customers pin nos, there's always a few poor sods that don't realise till its too late. :(

i've had the same thing, my wife advised some parts on the alfa forum, 6 months later i was getting emails saying that they had seen my advert and wanted to buy the car from me (I had sold the car by then).

So knew it was a scam straight away since i never advertised the car, but i can see how some desparate folks can be conned

very common in many different forms.

personally i don't see why people would think for even a second that it's genuine as why would someone pay full price for a car plus all the associated shipping costs when they haven't even seen the car itself.
