 Sorry this is off forum topic but I'm mystified by this o/s.

I can install Linux (RH9 – Bash) - Fine. I can create a user account - Fine.

But…

1.When ever I try to do anything at the command line I keep getting file not found and I can't execute anything....etc
2.When I set up xwindows the dam terminal doesn’t behave like the keyboard.

3. Running in root doesn’t seem to help either

I know you have to set-up some sort of .cshrc file in you home area etc but why doesn’t this thing get set-up as default so you can actually execute some commands!!!

What needs to be set-up to get things working???
Anyone got a basic set of the files needed to save keep setting things up?

Any help would be appreciated as I’m so frustrated with this OS. :censored:

RH9 shouldn't need any extra files or settings - the base install should install everythig you need to get up and running.

1. Are you sure that no errors occured during installation? What are you trying to execute? Do shell commands like ls, cd work?

2. What does it behave like? Which keys don't work?

I haven't seen these problems - I've always had good expereinces of RH9 (guess what this website is running on!)

Good luck!

As far as I'm aware the installation is fine. But I’m finding the RH9 has some things missing. Anyway. I have been using “suâ€

How are you adding users? I remember having issues using the pretty GUI tool - best bet is to drop to the shell and use "useradd name" - this is how I do it and it works fine.

Also I'm a biit surprised you're using telnet - these days it's best to use SSH which is installed with RH9 automatically. Then just use a Windows SSH client (such as Putty) to connect to the server. You may find that this solves your telnet issues.

Indeed you should only use the root account for stuff that can only be done by root. However, when it comes to installing software, modifying config files etc you will likely find that only root can do this so you have no choice. What are you trying to do that is failing?

I've never used SWAT so can't really help. Is the SWAT service running? (try typing /etc/init.d/swat start)I I do all my Samba configuration using a text editor ;) Webmin also has a pretty good Samba config system.

I learnt my basic *nix skills at university and then enhanced them by installing Linux and looking up any problems on the internet. There are many books around that will be a good starter on Linux but unfortuntely I can't recommend any as I've never used them!

Hope this all helps...

Hi,

>>"I remember having issues using the pretty GUI tool - best bet is to drop to the shell and use "useradd name""

This is what frustrates me about the O/S, You're told to use one application and then find out somewhere else that it don't work! :x

I'm using SSH with putty but I've also been tasked to setup all forms of client connection, including X-windows. :(

I got samba working eventually, I just wanted to know why, even though loaded, SWAT wouldn't fire up. I also wanted to see it's interface as ever time I ask some one about samba they say "Use SWAT" :x

 Thanks you for spending time answering the post. I think I'll just have to struggle along and head down to the local library for a book or to.

Thanks again.

Len

rather than use root, set up a user with root powers (just 'edit' the /etc/passwd), or use sudo.
i assume thats floating around on linux
