Would be nice to know if this is normal, as this is the first petrol engine we've had for years.

From cold and then when on light throttles, i.e. accelerating gently, the engine seems to have slight hesitance and does not pull perectly cleanly up the revs. Past 4000 rpm, everything is OK, also Ok if you accelerate quite heavily.

Any comments or experience ?

Regards

i have a 1.6 and it does the same thing
the engine is very sluggish when cold and sometimes when accelerating it feels like it's too slow to pick up
you press the gas
then a few seconds later it starts accelerating
i heard if you have it chipped it's much smoother.

Same here

Seems to turn into a different car above 4000rpm.

Any chance we have some multiplexing lag here? Throttle as I understand it is switched rather than cabled. I don't have problems with my 2.0 however the combination of an auto plus smaller engine may be enough to impact performance.

I also know too that there have been some problem with the auto transmission requiring some reprogramming. Might be worth getting it checked out.

I don't think it's a multiplexing issue as I have an "old spec" cc and it behaves in exactly the way you've all described. I notice it most when changing up from 3rd to 4th, if the engine's cold and I change up when I'm below 4000 revs, the cc seems to "lurch" when I let the clutch down - rather like when engine braking. It seems to go away when the engine warms up though.

Does anyone else feel the manual gearbox on the 1.6 is a little clunky?

I have had the same frustrating thing, slug like till 4000 rpm. But just fitted Pipercross induction kit and now no prob! Its much more usuable. Has a bit of a roar now though.

It's an irritating problem I know, especially as there is a steep hill I have to negotiate near my Girlfriend's place and I find I have to take it in first all the way. When I turn in and press the throttle it takes an age to pick up. I only thought my 306 Dturbo had throttle lag.

Ben302 seems to know what I'm talking about: my new 206cc 1600 stickshift stalls when starting up hills steeper than about 1:3, and I need to reverse all the way down to the bottom and taking it at speed. Since Haifa, where I live, is all hill, with lots of traffic lights. This is an embarrasing PROBLEM, as all the cars behind honk for the Pug to get a move on before the lights change. It also means that on the level, at the green, a bicycle is faster as the car chokes before taking off. Once over 2000rpm its perfectly happy. Local dealership have no solution, and are waiting for advice from France. I'd be grateful to hear from anyone with a similar problem, and even more grateful if they had it solved. Or if they know how to ask about it at some official Peugeot technical site etc.

We have the same pulling away problem with our 1.6S manual CC plus a couple of other problems - See '1.6 Running Problems', (presently on page 2 of the 'Other' problems section).

Our car has been back at Warwick Wright Brent Cross since 31st July and hopefully they will get it back to us soon.

They say they have replaced/done the following:
- Coil, spark plugs and leads, (already tried by Camdens of Bedford and made no difference).
- Condensor.
- Motorized throttle valve.
- Manifold pressure sensor.
- Carried out an ECU download.

Ours is, we believe, a non-multiplex car ie has single hazard switch/button and no on-board computer. The above sounds to me like they are guessing and don't know what they are doing. We will keep you posted when we get it back.

A point of interest - We have a multiplexed 1.6S auto CC as a courtesy car. It pulls away fine, but has developed the lumpiness whilst idling over the last week and would not restart until a 3rd atempt last Sunday.

The pulling away problem is very dangerous! I have narrowly escaped death on at least one occassion whilst pulling out at a junction!

I would suggest the dealer reprograms the engine management unit.

I had a similar problem with jerky engine on my first 2 litre. Seems the car had got confused

The engine was 100% better after the download.

It may not cure it, but is woth a try while you wait for a response from France...ZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Re the hesitancy on my manual 1.6L. Thanks Rob for the suggestion. My Garage reprogrammed the ECU but it made no difference. The Ecu (is that the right term?) for my version is 1709, apparently the latest update and version. So we are still waiting for something from France. In the meantime I cannot visit my friends in the village of Ein Hud, which is too steep for the pug. Yuk!

Re: Post on 25th August 2002.

Got the car back today after 4 weeks at Warwick Wright Brent Cross.

Engine did not pick up for 1st second or two when pulling away from all junctions, roundabouts on our test drive. WWBX's and Peugeot's guess work has not paid off.

We are going to attempt rejection again.

I see eye to eye with Eye See. They've replaced the motorised butterfly inlet thing. No difference. I am assuming mine is the multiplexed 16S - its Model year 2003, but it certainly has the throttle hesitancy problem, no (steep) hill-starts - or fast getaways.

talking about fast getaways....a CELICA 4wd 2.0 (1990s model) wanted to burn me at a traffic light..... got beaten easily... so thankfully I don't think I have that problem  8) 8)

It was the first time I've let go with my CC (nearly 1 month old but already 2500Km mind)

Felt really good, considering i was topless too! 8) 8) 8)
