For anyone who's considering it, I can heartily recommend the NetGear DG834G.

Already do it m8. Got a belkin router set up with the desktop pc, and a notebook network card in the laptop. so can use it anywhere in the house. Great in summer when you can take it out in the garden

A whole £5 cheaper. Wow! :P

I've had Belkin stuff before though, and it was very flaky. Netgear have a very good reputation and their firmware is open source for all the nerds out there. ;)

Don't know if it's any better or worse. I've had it for almost 18 months and no problem so far. Got the belkin Gear because It was offered at half price when I bought my laptop.

If you want to share the printer as well, you'll need one with a print server built in. I have the D-Link DI-714P+ which does the job, presuming you already have a cable/ADSL modem with an Ethernet port on it. If not, you'll need one with an integrated ADSL modem.

There are Netgear and Linksys equivalents to the D-Link. Personally I'd stick with one of the "network kit" manufacturers rather than go for Belkin.

You'll be needing Ethernet. USB is a horrible protocol -- it's for printers, scanners and whatnot, not networking.

Your cable modem should have an Ethernet port as well as USB (mine has).

Unless you plan on keeping the attached PC switched on, of course. ;)
