I am interested in improving the output of the standard head unit by adding an in-line post amp and some better speakers. I don't really want to 'bad it up' just get a bit more volume and a little more bass response has anyone tried this?
It doesnt look this there is much of a resonance cavity around the speakers so im not looking for loads of bas just a bit more punchyness and volume..
Any ideas or suggestions, any help is as always greatly appreciated..

The factory fit speakers won't cope with much more volume, so you'll have to replace them (the front ones at least) if you want it louder.
Then you'll find that the standard headunit doesn't have any RCA outputs so you'll have to get an amp with speaker level inputs. You can then connect the wires coming out of the headunit into the amp, then into the speakers. I imagine this could be quite fiddly.
You will also not get a huge amonut of extra volume with new speakers anyway - the problem being that as you say, there's not much room around or behind the standard speaker so you'll struggle to find some spakers that can provide punch.
Many people have installed Kenwood components in the front which I've heard increase the quality but not the maximum volume a great deal. Personally, I went for Phoenix Gold components, which again are better quality then the standard speakers and do provide more power, but not enough IMO.
Are you dead against replacing the headunit? If not then I suggest you get a decent headunit with built-in crossovers and RCA outputs. You can then install a modest amp in the boot or back of the car to power a sub and cut the bass off the front & back speakers so you can push them louder.
You may also want to talk to toot - he's installed some 7x10s (I think) under the windstop which apparently give much more punch.
I think you can buy adapters for sony headunits for the stalk and display. Kenwood are supposed to be bringing one out, but they've been saying that for years!
Kept the original head unit.
Upgraded the front speakers to Kenwoods 1776's.
Added amp with speaker inputs and 12" boxed kenwood sub.
Best thing do do is to get an ISO connector to work as an extension lead between the original car loom plugs and the stereo.
You are safer to cut into this lead than the original car wiring.
All i did was put a connector in the middle of the ISO rear left speaker cables to link to the amp.
then i got the remote wire for the amp connected to the yellow (i think) cable which is only live when the stereo is on.
Power lead for the amp was from behind the glove box as everybody else does it, and the earth was at the bottom of the rear seat back where it bolts to the car. Dunno if CC's have these.
All connected up and everything is fine...
Thinking of uipgrading the rear speaker next coz to be honest they sound appaling!!
Best way of getting more volume is to lower the bass on normal speakers to let them do what they do best and let the sub produce the bass...
