My lights stay on!!

Why when in auto mode do the lights stay on - even in brilliant sunshine!! The garage said they didn't know why - although since experiencing engine failure and having a EDU fitted, touch wood it's been ok today in this sunshine! Any suggestions?

Check that the area on the outside by the rear view mirror isn't dirty? The manual says that's where the sensor is.

The auto-on seems pretty good, although driving around on friday in the dull weather and rain it seemed they were coming on too soon, but on reading the manual it seems they come on in rain if the wiper is in auto and it's raining.
