Hyper mileing

Post by Johnnyb60 »

Hi , and hope your all well.
Today the weathers been fantastic and as it's father's day I popped over to see my aging dad some 70 miles from where I live.
With the current high price of fuel and the fact I'm as tight a camels backside in a sand storm, I more often than not ,drive very gently trying to get the best fuel economy out of the 2 litre petrol engine in my 206 cc
With the hood down, aircon off and a very light foot on the pedal I managed to get an astonishing 46 mpg over the 140 miles.
My usual weekly average on shorter journeys of 32 miles a day always returns around 40 mpg
I'm starting to think to whether how accurate is the mpg computer in the car.
I would be very impressed it were to be a true reading.
Kind regards
Johnny

The only practical way to assess mpg is this:

Fill up to the neck of the filler, so you can be sure of the level. Note the mileage. Next time you fill up, do so to the same level and note the amount required to fill and the mileage. The mpg is the distance between fill ups divided by the amount required to fill.

This method does not rely on imprecise measurement of fuel flow by the car. Fuel pumps have to be very accurate by law, and are tested to ensure compliance. Car mileometers can be up to 3% in error, so check yours against the distance markers on motorways over a long enough base to get an accurate comparison.
