Three keys fobs but only one worked (solved)

Post by Johnnyb60 »

Hi
My car came with three key fobs but when I tried them only one key would open the car and start it.
I had obviously got two issues here in that the two fobs were not activating the central locking on and off and the transponder inside the fobs where not communicating with the ignition immobilizer.
I got a bit suspicious that my car came with three keys because they usually only come with two, so I took apart the two none working fobs and discovered something interesting.
The previous owner must of bought the third key to replace the other tired one, swapped the electronic innards out but forgot to swap the transponder over leaving him without two working keys. After renuniting all the parts and a fresh battery I now have two working keys again.
All the best

Thank you GrandadMonkey.
The key set up is very much the same as a lot of other car's from what I can see.
There's two separate things that go on inside them.
A transponder chip that communicates with the ignition barrel and the remote that unlocks the doors 🤔
