Is it a power steering problem ?

Post by cantgrumble »

The steering on my 2006 206 with 52,000 miles on the clock suddenly became 'stiff'.
I checked the tyres...they were ok. So the problem appears to be the power steering. There are several 'bits' that may need replacing...What is the 'likely' problem and will I need a bank loan.

Thanks.

Have you checked the level of the power steering fluid? Has it gone down? May need topping up - if so find the leak.

Thanks for that......Yes I have checked the fluid level, though it's not quite clear where the level 'line' is.
The fluid is about an inch below the cap and I can see no obvious leaks from pipes leading to and from.

Thanks

The dipstick on the cap has two marks, min and max. The level should at least above min, and should not exceed max.

The power steering pump is belt driven. Is the belt slipping or broken?
