abs light go out when fixed?

Post by puzzledbloke »

Hi again.

Does anybody know if abs light always goes off once problem is fixed please? I found a reference on thebford Scorpio site which says teves mk20 needs a reset for hard faults like disconnected sensors. Not sure if 2001 car has mk20 ?

Also wondering if sensors are active? If they are, guessing I should see a voltage at the plug.?

Any help very gratefully received!

It doesn't go by year. If you want to know which make of brakes you have, post the last eight digits of the VIN.

Final update to thank everybody and just sum up. I hate it when people don't do this, it feels very ungrateful.

Long story short - car went in for not yesterday, and passed after a light unit had contacts cleaned.

On the very early abs, the sensor resistance is about 1040 ohms - original and ecp units. Ecp, even with huge discount, was nearly thirty pounds. An online unit for 11 quid had a resistance of 1140 ohms: fitted it anyway, works fine.

Pinout for abs unit connector I found online under teeves and scorpio; note that the locking me hanism is different but remainder seems the same. I was able to check supply voltages and more usefully identify which sensor connects where. Sensor connections are easy to id as they use twisted pair.

The garage I had scan it reported the same three sensors disconnected as I had unplugged during testing. This wouldn't clear. Turns out my suspicion was correct and this was erroneous. The replaced unit and two originals were fine. Using the dash "stop" warning works as a diagnostic tool. If you have two down, the stop sign comes up if you unplug a good one.

I cleaned up the ring on the front sensor I replace: both had a substantial amount of rust stuck to them.

Front sensor came out really easily; rear I had to drill out - possible without removing anything . I was worried I might damage the ring but you only have to drill out 15mm or less. . The disc side part of the sensor breaks up easily and drops past the shield.

Everybody who said it would clear as soon as fixed was spot on. 15 yards down the road, bingo.
Thank you very much. I'd started thinking about connecting to the abs using a bodged bit of software - glad I didn't - I suspect abs may reave codes in master controller hence garages issue.

Next time - I'll make sure that my daughter tells me when the abs light first comes on, and is around when it needs looking at. And I'll do a resistance test first and get a couple of cheap sensors in first.

Airbag switch was us but so intromittent my was connector.

Thanks again to everybody who helped, made a huge difference. Now all I need is the equivalent of forscan for Peugeot and like will be easy....
