Handbrake - rear caliper lever travel

Post by puzzledbloke »

Hi All
My daughter has an 02 1.6 manual cc with rear disks. Mot fail on os handbrake effectiveness and restricted travel. Pad is tilted (peg not in piston cutout!) in caliper so I think that explains some of it.

The handbrake lever only goes about 4 clicks, hard to pull from click one. This gives about 4-5 mm travel at the end of the cable. Handbrake off, I can move the end of caliper lever about that distance by pushing with my hand. It returns smoothly. I'm not familiar with these and wondering what the travel should be - the car does a very low milage and my suspicion is the cable may have been over adjusted - does this interfere with the automatic adjustment in the caliper?

Also wondering if there is a way to align the piston - I've seen it with the tell tale vertical and horizontal, does it matter as long as pad peg goes in the slot?

Many thanks in advance, greatly appreciated!

Hi All
My daughter has an 02 1.6 manual cc with rear disks. Mot fail on os handbrake effectiveness and restricted travel. Pad is tilted (peg not in piston cutout!) in caliper so I think that explains some of it.Would also effect service brake

Back it off till handbrake lever travels about 1/3- 1/2 up its travel. Also make sure cables operate smoothly.

Also wondering if there is a way to align the piston - I've seen it with the tell tale vertical and horizontal, does it matter as long as pad peg goes in the slot?So long as it's engaged in one of them, it doesn't matter

Many thanks in advance, greatly apprecia
Cheers Col.
