Bootlid feels like deadweight

Post by Robert206Torquay »

I had the roof down yesterday and had no problems. It closed fine last night. This morning went to put something in the boot and it was hugely heavy and would not remain up. Not sure if this is piston related or springs or if there is an easy explanation. The car has had relatively few problems - thank fully. Model year 2004 and just over 50000 miles. Glad of any thoughts please. Rob

The boot lid is controlled by two struts which attach to the hinges. I expect they are gas-filled, and one has sprung a leak. Part No 8731 F2 - tailgate prop.

To change the strut, you have to remove:

The rear seat
The rear seat back rest
The rear quarter panel side top trim
The rear quarter panel side trim panel
The rear seat belt housing

Then uncouple the top of the strut, then the bottom.

Fit the new strut. Tighten the rear seat belt housing to 3 daN.m (22 lb ft)

Or an end has popped off, it happened to me at christmas flung the boot up and broke both of them resulting in a boot lid as heavy as a boat anchor.

They are £40.85 each from the dealers and although they will be a lot cheaper from a scrap car they can be a pain to remove in a scrap yard because there is no electrics for the roof and windows and often the boot is locked because of the security feature on the lock.
