"Anti-polution fault", it says....

Post by chris57 »

Hi,
I am getting the above message in the centre, a ping and an engine symbol lighting up just above and to the right of the speedometer. Sometimes the engine "hunts" a bit and then is fine, but at present it's on 3 cylinders. Sometimes the light doesn't come on at all!
I have to go to hospital tomorrow and am worried it'll fail on me in some way. Can anyone tell me what's going on here?

Cheers,
Martin

The "anti-pollution" message can be caused by a sizeable number of things. The best way forward is to put the Peugeot Planet Diagnostic system on to the car, which will save time, hassle and money in the long run, rather than guessing and playing parts roulette.

You can take it to a Peugeot dealer, buy the hardware and software (e.g. this one), or see here.

A good pro reader will do the job just as well and won't limit the places to take it to. PP is only really needed for Peugeot specific stuff such as the roof.
I've just diagnosed an airbag fault on a Renault Clio and didn't need the Renault "Clip" Software. Snapon read it just as well.
Cheers Col.

When requesting help of a technical nature, please give as much detail of the fault as possible along with details of exact model, engine size & type, gearbox, year, mileage, and any relevant work carried out to try to solve the problem to help us help you.
Better still, put the details in your signature.

The light will come on when a lambda sensor detects unburnt hydrocarbons in the exhaust system. If the spark plugs are old I'd renew them with new Bosch Super 4's or Peugeot branded ones. Or it could be that you are doing frequent short runs only with the engine never getting fully warmed up. Worst case the coilpack could be on its last legs. You could be using cheap fuel instead of decent stuff. Any of these suggestions rings a bell?

Grandad Monkey, thanks. We've been moving house and I haven't used the car. I borrowed my son's big Honda as a van! But, on trying it again, same problem. Yet half of today it ran fine with no light on and half it was back on 3 cylinders!
Can't find a col pack for it as yet, but will change plugs.

OK, changed the coil pack and the plugs yesterday. Went like the wind into the village and back, then today did about 6 miles, then the beep and back to 3 cylinders. If I could afford it I'd roll it off a cliff somewhere, but have to fix it and the bloody roof which never works unless the son is standing near it!
So, new coil pack, new plugs, still trouble. BTW, what should the plug gap be. It was huge on the old ones and not much less on the new ones.

Please see post #2 in this thread. Every time the problem arises, the ECU is logging fault codes, which you need to have read to gain some insight into the cause.

And how much will that cost. Ian? I don't know anyone who does that stuff over here. I know a chap who might though. I'll ask him tomorrow. It seems strange that so many different things MIGHT be the cause.

I know in Star Trek it's always the dilithium crystals, but real life ain't like that :)

As to cost, if you follow up on the Peugeot Planet Map link, I guess £10 to £20, the DIY option you already know if you opened the link (and bear in mind that you would have the kit for future issues), and the dealer maybe £60 to £80.

Thanks Ian, gives me a vague idea of what to expect. I think y son-in-law knows somebody who charges £25 if he finds ought, nowt if he doesn't, which seems fair.

As we have moved into a new village I thought I would try the garage in the centre of the village who have a goo name, so I booked the car in there and today they did a diagnostic and it was an injector! Didn't expect that. Not too frightening a price to change it including the scan, so they're going ahead with it and we should get it back tomorrow.
Cheers,
Martin

Read this thread with interest as I have the same fault
I will have the logged codes read first.

I have reserved a premium coil pack at GSF, got it with a 42% discount!
Even so it was still £82, may not need it now.

I have just joined the forum, never had a modern car, didn't know about logged codes.
It sure does save on scatterparts fixing
so thanks CC forum
