I have a 2003 206cc 1.6, lovely car loads of history and well maintained. However I had the clutch kit changed last week and all seems fine but I still have a grinding/scraping/whirring noise especially in low gear. When clutch is engaged the noise stops. Drives ok and gears are smooth but have this annoying noise. I have looked on forums regarding similar problems and it seems this is opposite to the common clutch bearing where the noise I have dissapears when clutch depressed. Any thoughts appreciated.

Grinding noise
Hi, I hope someone here can shed some light on a problem I have.

Re: Grinding noise
Possibly gearbox bearing. Who fitted the clutch and was it a complete kit?
Cheers Col.

Re: Grinding noise
Does the noise persist with the gearbox in neutral? If so, it is probably the clutch release bearing, disengaged but "chattering". Its not a defect in the bearing. Some are noisier than others. It may also be the gearbox input shaft, but considering your case, unlikely. I have the same on a Suzuki Cappuccino. Its been like that for years and I just put up with it.

Re: Grinding noise
On the 2.0 ther's a sleeve that should be changed with the release bearing. Not sure if 1.6 has this but if it does and it wasn't changed it will be noisy.
Our 2.0 one was pretty destroyed when the clutch was changed in August.

Re: Grinding noise
The clutch kit I got from GSF didn't have the input shaft sleeve so I got one from my local dealers. I bet whoever changed the cj400's didn't bother.
I got a local garage to do ours due to my commitments but he stressed exactly what parts I should supply as I actually got them for less than he could at the time.

Re: Grinding noise
That part doesn't come in the clutch kit. You can get the sleeve from Eurocarparts for about £13 (It includes input shaft oil seal)

Re: Grinding noise
Paid about the same from Peugeot ... Might have been a bit less! But pennies ..

Re: Grinding noise
The 2 Peugeot dealers around here only keep a very basic stock of parts such as service items for current models, anything else has to be ordered and takes 2-3 days, so I only use them when I have to.
They don't even keep Comm2000 units, which must be one of the most common main dealer supplied parts across the Peugeot range.
