206 Look Gearstick vibration

Post by Standinwave »

I have a 53 plate 206 that my daughter drives. It has done 109k, largely troublefree. Recently, she thought that the handling was odd and took it to a garage who advised it was the anti-roll bar linkages. She didn't want to pay garage prices and I offered to help. I took OSF wheel off to discover that the spring had broken about 2/3 of a turn up from the bottom. OK, had exact same on son's Fiesta, so on with it. Anti roll bar linkages were rusted in place and were sawn out! I removed strut to find the bearings that were originally part of the strut mount were rusted to death and the casing had parted. The shocker came up slower than daffodils! Ordered all parts and fitted last weekend. Onto NSF, upon dismantling, found lower balljoint was like a spoon in a coffee cup, so did both wishbone arms too. All new bolts too. The front of the car was about 3 to 4 cm higher than before, resulting in monster truck comments from neighbour with another 206 in bits on his drive over a puddle of transmission oil!
I went for a test drive, suspension at front is lovely! However, at around 2000rpm in 2nd there is a severe vibration in the gear stick which goes away pretty much completely as speed (road and engine) increases. Not as bad in other gears at 2000rpm. No problem in neutral coasting downhill, so it's not the wheels. Brakes don't pull or squeal. No knocking with full lock applied at low speed. There's a dull vibration when decelerating on occasions.
Reading posts, mostly on here, I am wondering if it could be the rear engine mount and is maybe made worse or even caused by the engine, subframe and basically the whole front of the car sitting higher up as described? I checked the springs, shox and mounts before I used them and they were all the same size etc as the original. Could anyone confirm my suspicions or suggest what to look for in the mount itself (as viewed with OSF wheel removed) or any other possible causes? Cheers H
