snapped light indicator stalk! help!

Post by sharonenglish »

After a mishap with a country verge ;) I must have sharply hit my left indicator and light stalk with my hand...and it has snapped off the top two parts...as the internal shaft snapped in half.
A few curses and investigation later..I find that a new part would be around £380... Before labor...! As most likely a fully sealed unit with the other stalks...I can't just switch it out for a new single light/ indicator stalk.... Short of removing steering and replace the whole unit.
I am strapped for cash and can afford new parts..so looked into repair the damage. On inspection..the indicators worked fine if I plugged the 4 wire loom( 3 black and one red) into the end part...without the middle part that rotates to turn on the lights... So far so good..shaft that is snapped is hollow. And a clean break so a dowel inside to reinforce the join and superglue..should work... Except the wire loom is far too short to thread through the middle section..to plug into the top part...and reattach to the car portion...my plan was to cut the wires and solder onto each a new length of wire( got from maplins the approx grade wire)... And reattach to the remnants of the wires I left still attached to the plug at the end...so as not to disterb the connection in the pin plug... On cutting I did make one mistake...and I forgot to label the ends still wired to the car.. So I had 3 black wires and not sure of order... But that left only 6 combos so I thought not a big deal.
I have reattached new colour coded wires to each part( shrink coated with wire shield so firm and shielded. Attached the red wire to corresponding one on car..as that wire is clear to match... I have worked out the 2 of the remaining " black" wires..seem to make the indicators work( would have thought only one would have... ) so both wires seem to be working fine.. I tried every one of the 6 possible combos of wires...reconnected all sections of the stalk... And the lights still do not come on..when I twist the middle section...and one of them should have worked.
Between the end and the middle section there is a small bridging circuit where two points on the circuit on the end need to meet the contact bridge on the middle section...which should have off/ side/ main beam on headlights. I am sure I have all the parts as the spring loaded bridge connector is still in ace on the middle section.. And it is obvious from the setup..the two ends of the bridge are supposed to meet on the top section.. To complete the circuit for the lights...
I am going to try bridging the circuit on the top section manually with a wire..to see of I can get the lights to respond without the middle section...in case the internal prongs of the switch bridge are slightly bent so they are not running where they should on te circuit board...
I am sure it is not a fuse issue...as I can get my headlights to go on with full beam when I pull the stalk towards the driver...as I would if I was flashing them on... But the lights switch off as soon as the stalk goes back to the neutral position.
My gut still says it is a connection problem..and my rewiring is solid..what will I need to do bar bending the little prongs on the circuit bridge up to improve the connectivity of this point?
I really do not want to have to replace an entire unit..for a small wiring issue

This is a 206sw 5 door estate..05 reg...forgot to add.
I have googled on eBay and I have discovered that I was correct in that there The many different model numbers for this sort of part..but on the whole it looks a replacement would need a full sealed unit..requiring the steering wheel to come off ...I have checked a d it seems to be a fairly easy this g to remove..if I disconnect battery so the airbag doesn't blow... I am a reasonable novice to car repairs..but I am also a have a go kind of gall;) if I have to get the unit... Would I be able to do it at home..or am I still going to have to get a garage to fit it?

Hi Sharon and welcome. If you want to have a go, make sure you follow the battery disconnection method as shown in electical section.
The comm 2000 unit is quite straight forward to replace. There is some info here
Cheers Col.

Ok...update...I have determined that the curcuit on the end which houses the two contact track is ok... A guy in maplins kindly tested it with a multimeter to ensure that it I'd a clean circuit, and it enables the current to go between them.. With a bit of jigging with making a small extension to the sensor leads with a staple...he tested the circuit by having one contact on the sprung contact bridge on the middle section...and fiddling through the unit to pick up the area to contact on the circuit board...no connection... So we think the small sprung bridging connector( not sure of official term) is not bridging the contact..so could be bent out of alignment.
This means I need to get this contact working first or nothing will work.
Strangely I discovered today that when the car ignition is in and engine. On...my headlights come on...even with none of the stalk wires connected :P
So I sort of have lights..just not controlled by the stalk.
Well I have decided to also get the guy in halfords to ensure I had the right star screwdriver to take off the cover to the steering...just in case I do need to replace the whole unit..so I can find the right part number.
I will get there.. By hook or crook

ERM.... Safe battery disconnection procedure...just noticed that....I thought you were wanting me to be safe..not touch the terminals etc.... I didn't know I had to do sacred voodoo ritual to unplug the battery :hmm:
I had to make a judgement call from the start..as I noticed that I was somehow still having a light on in the car, and the front side lights were on..so I didn't want it to drain the battery... Didn't know I had a whole shut down procedure to follow too. I also did not fancy soldering live wires... What would I need to look out for if this bsi has also been scrambled? Atm I thought I was only working on the premise off extend length of wires, connect up, make the main contact work..hook up and glue back in...
I hope I haven't just made it worse

BSI can do strange things when screwed. Imobiliser faults, engine won't run, components not working properly, etc:. I personally would change the Comm unit as *fixes* to the unit never seem to last.

Ok update...sorted the wiring totally for headlights and Indicators..\o/... But went on to sort out the twist connection on the little brass bridge connector in the middle section popped out...never to be seen again arggg!!!
Searched high and low...no luck...I might need to make one up... I am sure I need fog lights for mot in may...
I am tempted to just seal it all up...and carry on looking for a replacement indicator unit.. I have at least managed to locate the part no...96530926xt... Which looks like an integrated unit...but the radio stalk can be taken off...
If I do go down the replace the stalk... On disabling the steering airbag... Do I also need a special key to disable it? Noticed a small lock on the right on the dash indicating it was airbag disable key socket... So disconnecting the battery... Wait for a good half hour to discharge charge...is that really all I need to be concerned with?
If so I really see that replacement relatively straightforward.
But I have other issues on this car that are mounting up to an expensive list of things going wrong.
I have a cracked wiper washer bottle( after the verge disagreement last week)... I have my engine with lumpy/ rough idle ( determined by apassing mechanic fixing a neighbours car)to which he thinks I need to go back to the guys that rebuilt my engine after I lost compression, and it was stripped back. He says they should have checked them as they put this bit back as good practice...but didn't.. So should get done free on Goodwill.
Also he says the most recent noise issue is a rubbing clutch release bearing.... Which I can drive with..just it will get annoying and may make clutch changes gradually harder..so possibly a new 3 piece clutch.
I bought this car almost 3 years ago... For £3000.... And I have spent £800 for the compression issue... I am unemployed, so funds low, I am not sure if I should attempt to exchange it for another car now...or pay the fixs up to now...
