Timing belt marks

Post by Ricky5555555 »

Hi there can you confirm the timing belt marks on the 1.6 16v engine, I can find the two dowel holes on the camshaft sprockets with no problem and was expecting to find the crankshaft hole in the engine casing behind the oil filter, no hole?, on removing the crankshaft pulley I noticed there was a line on the drive gear for the belt , behind the pulley, at 180 degrees straight up and down, I used this as a reference and changed the cam belt, put everything back together and engine starts and runs fine, no problems I thought, however I no get the dreaded anti pollution fault and engine management light, I plugged in obd diagnostic reader and get code p0341, camshaft position sensor ,is it my timing likely to be out a tooth, I checked and the three marks on the belt line up when I align the camshaft and insert dowels, or is it a faulty cam sensor, initially car ran fine, now the light is not and engine spins a few time before starting and runs a bit lumpy, however pulls okay, sound fine and does not cut out,

Have a read of this thread for explanation http://www.peugeot206cc.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=11459 It does sound like it is out a tooth.
Cheers Col.

Cheers Col, the link and photos are excellent, I fitted exactly as per photos so I am confident the timings correct, the car ran fine for approx. 2 weeks before the fault came up so I reckon the sensor is faulty, I will order anew one and strip and recheck the timing marks when I get a min, I am regretting buying this car 55 plate with 78K, that 's what happens when you take your wife to the auctions I had since the 15th Feb and to date I have changed the full exhaust including cat, lambda sensor, Map Sensor, fitted a reconditioned rear axle, front discs and pads major service including timing belt and aux belt, 2 x door check straps next job is a new clutch and I am going to replace the gearbox input shaft bearings as I get the usual MA gearbox rattle when out of gear and clutch out put clutch pedal in and goes away, currently I am doing the same gearbox job on a 307 for the mother in law another auction bad decision, 2nd hand Peugeots are cheap but a lot of work, on the 307 the top McPherson strut bearing seized causing the spring to twist and over a period snap, this popped the o/s/f drive shaft out and smashed the gearbox differential through the casing, lots of fun, I ordered a new gearbox from a breaker and fitted and the input shaft bearings are knackered I juts pulled the box out and stripped and the bearing failed, next job on the 206 is going to be the strut bearings!

will post on how I get on with the sensor,

any idea where I can get new rear axle brake disc dust covers

Sounds like you have inherited someone elses reason for getting rid of it. At least the MA box is easy and cheap to repair.
Try re-pinning the cams & flywheel to confirm timing is correct, then try cleaning crank position sensor.
Cheers Col.

Is the 1.6 16v like our 1.4 where you pin the flywheel under the crank through the gearbox casing? I know 2.0 is pinned at front after removing crank pulley.

Yep. Pinned into flywheel. 1.4 & 1.6 are very similar in most things.

Just to confirm there,s no hole to pin to the flywheel, I have changed many belts on 1.4 with the hole with no problems however on this 1.6 there's no hole, i have also just removed the gear box from a peugeot 307 with the same engine and ma gearbox and again no hole, on the 2.0 there's a notch on the drive gear behind the pulley so you can pin, the 1.6 is a pain will check when I get the new sensor and post my findings

Hi there , quick update, stripped car at weekend and also removed the oil filter and the filter extension housing, and found the crankshaft hole, on the 1.6 engine the oil filter housing obscures it and you must take of for access, insert a 6mm drill bit or rod, I checked all the timing and was spot on, built back up and same fault, next went looking for the camshaft position sensor, I have a new one, however after much head scratching found there not one fitted to this engine, so why code p0341, on checking further, I gave found that using generics code reader on Peugeots is not a good idea and code p0341 could just about mean anything, I reckon its a faulty coil pack and have ordered a new one from eBay, I am also going to change the plunges from NGK to Bosh

That's why I said
try cleaning crank position sensor.
in post above. I have seen that code before when it is crank pos sensor at fault.

Well new Coil Pack arrived today and I have just fitted, it worked a treat and car is now running fine and as good as new, I had to turn the engine on x 4 times as it takes this long to cycle the ECU and light popped of straight away, on checking other forums the P0341/antipollution is a common fault with Peugeots' and is usually the Main Coil Packing breaking down under load 34 pounds from ebay overnight delivery FOC however I will save that on fuel in a month as I was only getting 25 MPG with the fault and now up to 40 - 45 which is a good as it gets, happy days now onto gearbox overhaul
