Coolant temperature too high?

Post by wales1975 »

I have searched the forums without a definitive answer.

OK, I noticed yesterday that the coolant temperature was riding a little high whilst standing in traffic, it was difficult to tell if the cooling fan was cutting in, but the temperature was sitting around 99-100. of course the traffic cleared after a few minutes and then the temperature then went back down to 90 where it usually sits. The coolant was flushed and bled correctly last year, so I shouldn't have any air locks.

So the question is at what temperature should the cooling fan kick in? I read elsewhere that the cooling fan should kick in at 97-99 degrees, but would like to get this verified...

I will try to idle the car today to check if the cooling fan is kicking in, but in the mean time thoughts are appreciated.

I've never seen it specified anywhere at what temperature the Bitron control unit brings the cooling fan into action. The boiling point of coolant with the correct anti-freeze mix is going to be at least 120 degrees C in the pressurised system so unless your gauge goes into the red I wouldn't worry.

I check if my fan cuts in by leaving the engine running while stationary after a run-out. I don't check often, just occasionally when I put the car away in the garage. When I hear the fan cut in I know its ok.

You are going to do the same to check it and I'd be interested to hear the result.

You'll get the warning beeps and 'STOP' flashing if it gets too high.
