Car won't start even though battery has been charged

Post by InkyAl »

My 2002 206CC has had a new battery and alternator a couple of months ago.

On Friday when I left work the car wouldn't start. I opened the bonnet to check the battery connections (they had been loose once.) they were ok so I shut the bonnet got in and the car then started.
Tried it Saturday morning and it started ok.
Monday morning - nothing! It would not start.
Battery has now been charged - thought it could be that I only do short distances in the car - 10 miles a day 5 days a week.
It still won't start.

Any ideas? :|

If you have sorted out the connectivity issue - +ve & -ve leads and earth, then the starter motor is the obvious thing to check. How many miles has the car done? Is that mainly urban or rural use? Starter motors don't last forever. Has it ever been replaced in the last 12 years?

I wish people would give more info than "it won't start"

Is the engine cranking over? At normal speed or sluggish?
If not, is there any other sound? (clicking)
Do all the lights come up on the dash when ignition turned?
Cheers Col.

Thanks for replying both. Sorry I didn't give enough detail I am not very mechanically minded and have no idea what you need to know!
SO..................
The engine does not turn over. There is a churning sound then dead. No clicking sound I don't think but am at work now so can't check that. All the lights come on. Starter motor replaced before I got it. Couple of years ago. car has done 75,000 miles. mainly urban use for last 1500 but no idea before that.

Churning sound indicates starter is turning. Have you got jump leads you can try?
If it starts with those it is indicating flat battery, which could be because it's not being charged or the battery is duff. Have you got access to a digital meter?
Let us know how you get on and we can suggest what to try next. OK?

BTW. At that age / mileage, it should have had a cam belt (timing belt) by now. Do you know if it has been done?
Cheers Col.

Battery has been fully charged by kind partner while I am at work and car still not starting. I do have jump leads but if battery has been charged (and is only a few months old) will that do anything? I don't have a digital meter.

Before it stopped working totally the car always made a turning over/coughing sound before it actually started. Someone suggested starter motors did that if they were faulty?

It has had a cam belt change a year or two ago.

If the battery is not accepting a charge due to it being faulty, then it may not work.
Before it stopped working totally the car always made a turning over/coughing sound before it actually started
I am still confused as to whether it is cranking over or not.
To be completely clear, does it sound like this when you turn the key? This is what I mean by "engine cranking"
Cheers Col.

Hi Col

No the engine is not cranking - it just churns once and then nothing.

OK.
Either the battery is not accepting a charge because it is faulty (Did you try jumper leads? If it starts with jump leads, then battery is faulty) or the starter (or associated wiring) has gone faulty (more likely the starter than the wiring) If you take the starter to a good auto electrician, they could test it for you.
Cheers Col.

Thanks for replying both. It was the earth wire to the battery! Someone in the past had joined it and it was a right bodge. I'm up and running again. Great to get help from you again, much appreciated.

Well done Al. Sounds like you're shortening the list of things to do, which will help you get more enjoyment out of the car. If it's any consolation, and in defence of the car itself, the issues from which you have suffered sound to have been created by past owners bodging things (rather than fundamental design problems with it). So in theory it should be a finite list and not an everlasting conveyor belt of problems!!!
