HELP: WIPERS SEIZED HALF WAY AND SLIGHT BURNING SMELL

Post by habibix »

Hi all,

Our 206cc 2002 1.6 yesterday in the middle of the rain decided to pack the wipers in, and i could smell a slight burning smell in the interior. AA came tried a new fuse in engine bay fuse 17 - it blew. He then disconnected the power from wiper motor and tried another fuse - it blew.

A local garage has said the wiper motor and fuse box under steering will need replacing. Is the internal fuse box easily replaceable i.e. would it change the cars identity in terms of mileage, key codes, etc.. How much would this cost - its sad as I was hoping to sell the car in good working order next year - just did the MOT last month..

My strong concern is can it be something other than the fuse box as everything else is working fine in the car and driving as normal - except for the wipers so I don't know why the whole fuse box will need replacing?

Any help will be appreciated. Many thanks.

No you can't just change the fusebox unless it's a new one supplied and coded by Peugeot to your car- That's not going to be cheap!.
The fusebox contains the BSI and is intergrated with the engine ECU, immobiliser and ignition key. If you're sure the problem is in the fusebox / BSI unit, it may be better to send it to somewhere like BBA reman for repair.
I think I would get another opinion first as your garage doesn't seem to understand the BSI unit.
Cheers Col.

Thanks Col for the reply.

I explained to the chap at the garage just earlier - would it affect my the BSI he explained on my one the BSI is not on the fusebox as it older model and that those built a year after mine have the BSI on the fuse box..

I have attached an image of the fusebox - so I am ok to get the fusebox replaced - he mentioned he will get in new parts?

Have a look at the label on your 1st pic. Can you see its says "BSI (looks like) E01 XXX
That is the BSI number which is part of the fuse box. Also the shunt *fuse* gives it away.

I agree. There appears to be something in the fuse holder. Can you pick it out with a stout needle or similar?
Cheers Col.

After few weeks of driving in horrible weather with Rain X slapped on the windscreen around the holiday period, and after allot of stress, the car is now fixed and the wipers are working again!

Took it to another garage in North London (Palmers Green), which has a dedicated french car specialist designed website, they diagnosed the wiper motor was at fault, after ordering the part and replacing that, the wipers were still were not working and they further diagnosed that the body module as faulty...

So they then ordered a second hand body module yesterday which arrived today and was fitted today and thus, the wipers are now working again. They said the Body Module had gone which blew the wiper motor...

So the initial garage I took it to was correct? The BSI had gone?? Is Body Module the same thing as the BSI (found under the steering wheel)? And how come mine did not need programming etc and I still have the same keys, mileage etc?? Hmmmm

Is the the Body module just a pluggable module just like the Roof Module/Alarm Module? As mine is an 2002 (02) plate may be it doesn't need programming?? Confusing...

Any ideas?

Thanks
