Air Con electrical burning smell!!

The weather finally prompted me to have my air con recharged on my 2.0 2002 CC . Took to a local garage with a good but tad expensive reputation for full aircon service and charge.
mechanic told me on picking up car that he has uncharged the system, as when he charged it and the solenoid valve for detecting it was charged kicked in there was an electrical burning smell coming from the area of the aircon pump/alternator. and he wasn't risking a car fire.
The alternator was replaced in Jan and the battery in Feb after previously posted charging faults. there arent that many wires going to the air con in that area of the bonnet.
Has anyone any suggestions where to start looking or has a wiring diagram that will help?

I'm having to drive with the roof down, god forbid :rotfl:
