How do I know it's the exhaust manifold?

Post by han18 »

Me again, bit tired of this! :(

Noticed this since having cambelt and suspension arm changed, don't think they are related but thought I'd let you know. Got a 1.6 2002 Pug CC, 51k miles.

When the car is 'working hard' eg going up hill it makes this weird vibrating sound in the back. Sounds like it's coming from the exhaust. And when I rev it hard (particularly in 1st and 2nd gears) it makes a horrible tinny sort of noise. I would call it a bit like stones being shaken gently in a tin can.

Sometimes when I rev it the noise is there during the revs and when I put the clutch down to change gear it is even louder than it was before I touched the clutch.

I have done research and it looks like it could be pointing to an exhaust manifold thing....how do I know for sure and how do I go about fixing it? :hmm:

Many thanks!

Sounds more like loose baffles in the exhaust, or the exhaust has moved while the car was worked on and is touching a heat shield.

I remember that some time ago someone complained of a noise like wire coat-hangers rattling in the boot but I don't know what the cure was, see

It's still doing it, if not worse now...Might have to have a look underneath and see where the noise is coming from
