rattling sounds when in drive

Post by groovy-gray »

Hi

Wounder if anyone can help.

I have a 206cc convertible 53 plate 2003 1.6 allure model with automatic transmission.

It has seemed to have developed a rattling sound. When in idle it is fine engine ticks over perfect. I then engage the automatic gear box in either drive or reverse (under load) and a rattly sound appears I can only describe it as putting small fine stones in metal jar and shaking it.

I pull away and the sound seems to disappear. When I pull up and stop and still in drive the sound comes back. Take it out of drive and put into either park or neutral it stops.

very baffled. Any suggestions please

Thanks

Graham

Hi, I think the noise you are describing is the catalytic converter heat shield vibrating - I have the same, found it but not fixed yet. When the car is cold, pop the bonnet and at the back of the engine compartment between the cat and the bulkhead you will find the heat shield, just ping it with your finger, if you have the same problem as me you will recognize the sound. Also, the heat shield on mine (2.0l manual) is attached to the car not the exhaust.
