Will Connects 2 work with a 2002 model?

I have been researching the Connects 2 devices to plug an iPod into the original Clarion stereo, but all of the literature that I can find lists compatibility as post 2004 CC's.

I have a 2002 52 plate that I want an iPod to work with, but I'm nervous about forking out for a Connects 2 device if it isn't going to work!

Any advice / suggestions most appreciated.
