Keyfob not working, car won't start, alarm keeps going off

Post by Ballso »

Hi all,

I've just been out to the car and I noticed when I tried to remotely unlock it via the key fob (old style, two buttons, no LED) that nothing happened. I thought I might've left it unlocked, but nope. I manually unlocked the car and the alarm starting going off, so I put the keys into the ignition and turned to de-activate it. Then I tried to start the car to no avail, there is just no response. Occasionally, the dash lights might come on, but then they go off and I still can't start the car. Tried several times of locking, then unlocking the car and each time the alarm has gone off and I've had to deactivate it.

I've had to leave the car as it is and have manually locked it (after several times of the alarm going off again intermittently). I'm non plussed as to what is going on. It's never happened before, and the car was used yesterday and the key fob worked and everything.

Can anyone suggest what the issue might be?

Is the key battery dead? Have you replaced the battery recently and lost the chip from inside the key fob? If no to both have you tried reprogramming the key as per your owner's manual.
See the following thread which may be of help:

It's a 2002 206 XSi. I lost the spare key ages ago unfortunately, so the key I have now is my only one. How can I check whether the key battery is dead? All I know is that the car doesn't respond when I try to unlock it via the button on the key fob (which might suggest the battery has gone). Though it has 'not responded' in the past, but it's one of those things that you try two or three times more if the first time doesn't work, and then it has always worked.

Not much help I know, but it's just strange that the alarm was still going off when I was actually manually unlocking the drivers side door, that, combined with the fact that I couldn't start the car is what has got me worried. Also, after manually unlocking the door and then shutting it and pressing the button on the fob to lock the door, it doesn't work either. I also forgot to say that even when I unlock the door manually, the red 'alarm' LED light inside the car (near the clock) still flashes.

I'll try reprogramming the key in the morning before work. Thanks for your help, any more help would be much appreciated!

Take the battery out and test it with a multimeter - it should give out 3 volts.

The battery is a CR2016. They don't cost much from places like Wilkinsons. Put a new one in and reprogramme it if necessary. Don't lose the chip out of it!

Grandadmonkey's suggestions covers it all I would say.

a few years ago i was having a discussion with a friend about key fob batteries and how the fob worked and how to get in the car when the battery failed as our cars had no manual locks on the doors only the fob here is what we did.
phoned the wife on her mobile (mobile to mobile) she was 300 miles away,
asked her to get the spare fob and put it against her mobile mic and press the unlock button when asked,
i put my mobile against the door and shouted "press the unlock" 1 sec later the car unlocked, bingo it worked got in and started the car.
conclussion is, remotes use RF and can be carried through mobile airwaves, this was done on the old style mobile (anal log) and only worked on certain handsets so might not work with the digital/smartphone era we have now.

I have just had this problem. Did changing the battery in your key fob and/or reprogramming the fob fix the problem for you? I don't understand how this would stop the car from starting though.....
