SERVICE INDICATOR not sure it is working

Post by NIalls »

Hi can someone tell me.. I have got my Peugeot 206 '01 serviced. The garage reset the service interval and we were off. I checked the service interval indicator and it read from 12000 to 11950, so it was working. Now I thought it was strange as I did not think I had gone 50miles. So driving it around I noticed the indicator was not counting down even though I had gone a mile. So I reset the counter again to 12000. I drove the car around to find if the service interval was clocking down first and then correctly. The counter kept reading 12000 after doing 3miles. Repeated again, resetting the counter did another 3 miles. Nothing.. Now does the sevice indicator count down in a 1:1 ratio to the miles you do or does it decrement in 10miles, 50miles or 100miles. Thanks for reading this... Please tell me it's not a 1:1 ratio

I think you are worrying about nothing. On our 206cc we can leave the car in the garage for a couple of weeks and the indicator will come down without having covered any miles. This is because the service indicator operates on both a distance covered and time elapsed basis. Our 1.6 206cc has a service interval of 20,000 miles or 2 years, whichever comes soonest. When reset the indicator never goes as high as 20,000 miles. The indicator is just that - an indicator. It is a reminder to check when the last service was carried out and get it booked in for the next one.

As I do my own servicing, and believe that 2 years is too long an interval anyway, mine gets looked at every 12 months. An oil and filter change every 10,000 miles or 12 months should keep the engine in fine fettle.

I wouldn't keep resetting the indicator as you are doing.

I don't know what the ratio is, but it certainly isn't 1:1, so as Grandad says, I wouldn't worry :)

Thanks lads, or you could be ladies (you just never know these days) Well it did freak me out how if I only went 10miles my indicator was saying I had gone down by 50. But as you said not to worry. I am believer of service intervals of a year.. Two years is too long..

Thanks all that have given advice, much appreciated!!
