Car not starting

Post by Rich6688 »

Just bought a Peugeot 206S 1.4 Auto ‘05 reg (only 25000 miles) and sometimes it wont start and just makes a clicking noise. If left for long time or over night it works fine. However, nip into shops and come back and it wont start. Any ideas please.

Starter motor or connections from battery, starter motor and earth. But some cars built in that year suffered from a bad batch of starter motors.

I'd check all the connections first but suspect your cure will be a new starter motor.

Let us know how you get on, and welcome to the forum.

As an aside:
For those of you who have problems getting the car to turn over and start as the colder mornings of autumn arrive, especially if your cars are 6 or 7 years old or more and are on the original battery, then it is most likely time for a new battery. Bear in mind the battery for the 206cc is taller than the standard 206 battery. Make sure you buy the correct one.

Yes, the clicking definitely sounds like a starter motor issue. I remember one of my first cars having this problem and the mechanic said, just hit it (the starter motor...not the car!) with a hammer! I don't recommend, but funnily enough, it did get it working!

Yes, that used to work sometimes but it wouldn't solve the problem in this case, even if you could get in there to hit it.

We have been there before, see:

Bought new starter motor (fitted price £195.00). Been out for run yesterday. All seems to be working fine.
Thought price as a bit steep, but done now anyway.

Thanks for all the help.
