UPDATE: Roof working - but problem with the switch itself...

Post by rhinatron »

Morning all,

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

My girlfriend bought a 2nd hand 2004 206cc, and it seemed to be in decent condition. The guy replaced the battery for us before we took ownership and within a few days there were issues with starting the car and the alarm going off constantly. After going through the checks with a multimeter thinking that the alternator was on it's way out, it turns out that he didn't tighten one of the terminal clamps enough !!! So, a few tweaks later and it's on nice and secure and there were no problems.... until Saturday!

The sun came out so we decided to take the roof down. We opened the hooks and the 'beep' signal sounded out. We have the car parked up, with the ignition on and the boot cover pulled but after pressing the roof button nothing happened. It didn't even start to move, no whirring or any noise.

I;m thinking that this could be down to three things:
1) The new battery he put in is too weak (i.e. the cheap option). As we've got the old battery as well, I'll try this when I next see her.
2) Maybe a fuse has gone for that circuit - possibly down to the loose terminal
3) The micro-switch has gone (I've checked it for loose connections and there aren't any)

Has anyone had similar issues with this type of problem? Is there a minimum aH rating for the battery in a 206cc? Are there any checks I can do to test the fuse - is that circuit easy enough to identify? If it's the switch, are these easy enough to replace?

Thanks a million in advance!

Tom

Try it with the engine running. That will eliminate the battery question.

We did that as well!

All combos... engine on/off, ignition at position1, 2, windows up and down... but no luck.

I'll try the boot sensor I think, as there was no noise or sign of effort from the roof at all... There was no error beeping and no movement at all.

thanks!

This is guna sound well stupid but...... you say you "pushed the button" when you take the roof down, you have to pull the switch upwards...... just a thought, if it was a switch you'd be getting some sort of error beep i think.....

We pulled it, but tried pushing it as well!

When you mentioned that the switch would beep, did you mean that it would beep if the switch had failed? Or if we were pushing it when it was already closed?

Does anyone know of a way of checking / cleaning the sensor for the boot cover?

Thanks

check the metal clip is present in the holder, i think that is the sensor... its on the left side where the cover is held in place...

Yeah when you unhook the clips, if there was a problem i dont think you would get the initial beep (when you unlock the roof at the front) and you would get a set of chimes.... if you search on here there is a youtube clip that show you how to deal with malfunctions on the roof on someones post......

Sorry I cant be more help!!

Update:

Got home tonight and tried both of your suggestions... I think the battery was fine, and we tried the roof with the engine running before and it didn't work. I double checked the boot sensor and it seemed to be engaging... so we decided to test it...

And it worked.... at first!

The roof went down smoothly (so obviously no issues with the hydraulics) and went back up smoothly. We tried it for a second time, and nothing happened! Luckily, as it was night time we could see that the backlight on the switch was flickering on and off (mostly off) so we've seemed to have found the problem. I tried the connections and they seemed to be secure but when I gave the switch a squeeze the light flashed on. The roof went up and down fine after this. I need to change the switch... has anyone got any guidance on this? I think it's simple enough... (famous last words)

Whilst doing this, we also discovered another problem. The passengers rear window only comes up half way and stops. It goes all the way up if you give it a little pull - is this a problem anyones resolved before? Is it something I can solve by resettign the switches, or is it out of sync?

Thanks a lot guys!
