On my way into work radio on my car just stopped working. Thought it might just be no signal so parked and did a days work. When I got in the car to go home in the evening still no radio plus now the display screen did not work. Electric windows and hood switches also did not work. They had been fine first thing that morning so clearly all stopped working together. Interior light is fine, the headlights work and the backlight to the speed etc works OK. I have had it checked at a (non-dealer) garage but I am not convinced by their explanation that I need a new display unit and window switches as that does not explain how they all died at the same time and they say the new display unit will fix the radio/CD player!!! All suggestions welcome.

What model? How old is the car? Is it the original battery? How many miles? When was it last serviced? How many miles a week do you do? Any other symptoms recently?

Car is 2001, 206CC 1.6 engine, new battery last year, 73000 miles, last serviced at 65,000miles, weekly do about 200 miles with regular longer journeys of about 250miles about twice a month. Just AFTER the problems started I had 2 weeks without using the car and it started straight away so the battery seems to be fine.
I have noticed that if I do not drive for a day that the display will come back though faintly and then fade away to nothing as I drive. A bit like a torch when the battery was running out. I have another major symptom that I only noticed once the radio stopped working (I usually have it on all the time) and that is that there is a hissing noise that seems to be coming from the front passenger side when I break or slow down and the gears seem to be a bit clunky. The same garage that told me the display unit and window switches need replacing told me that the noise means that the brake servo needs replacing. Hope that is enough info.

I'd check the battery connections just to eliminate the possibility of a loose connection.
The display could just be dull or failed bulbs as they are 9 years old. You could try new bulbs - not expensive.
The window switches can be checked with a multimeter, did the garage do that? It would be strange for both to fail simultaneously but they could be right if they've checked them individually. Worth checking the fuse if not.
The hissing noise will be the servo, yes. A new one should cure it.
Has the brake/clutch hydraulic fluid been renewed in the last 2 years? If not, it should be. After renewal of the fluid the hydraulics will then be bled. This could well improve your clutch and hence reduce the clunkiness of your gearchanges.
If not renewed already, your timing belt will be due for replacement imminently.

thank you so much for your advice. The battery connections is a good tip I will look tomorrow. I do not know if they checked the switches with a multimeter but they did check the fuses. The display does indeed seem to be dim I will certainly suggest a new bulb. A lot cheaper I suspect than a new display. Unfortunately the bulb is unlikely to have any effect on the radio
I got a new timing belt last year when I had it serviced along with new brake discs all round.
As far as I am aware the brake fluid has not been renewed unless that is part of the big 60,000mile service I had done last year. I will find out
Once again thank you

Radios are not really my forte. Is it just the radio? In other words is the CD player working still?

I've had exactly the same problem this week.....
I was driving home then suddenly the audio went dead and the central panel faded....... tried the roof and windows today and both are dead (but worked perfectly fine before this problem)
Did you manage to resolve this issue? what was wrong? because is sounds EXACTLY what's happening with mine now and would like a bit of a pointer if you got it fixed javascript:insert_text(':love-thx:',%20'');
Incidentally, last weekend I was doing 70.. ish.. and suddenly all the needles on the dash zeroed, put my foot on the brake and they all came back again to normal, just wondered if you've had the same problem, although that might be unconnected
And I thought all my electrical problems were got rid of when I changed cars to this one lol!

I've fixed this problem totally today.
Went along to an electrial diagnostic centre and it was indeed just a fuse (unknown why it blew)
Solution:
Open your panel underneath the steering wheel
Replace F4 fuse (20a - Yellow fuse front of the panel on the left)
Hope this helps anyone else with the same predicament
