Really needs a diagnostic test. Sounds as if the exhaust gas mixture is outside limits. Could be one of several things.
The service history of the car might help, and the model. All we know is it is a 2002. Not much to go on.
Search the forum - you should get some ideas from that.
Happy New Year.

I would suspect hydraulic tappets. But it could spark plug(s), coil pack or other. Does the idling improve a lot when it warms up or does it remain when engine is hot?
Ask the colleague if he/she had experienced any problems whatsoever before, hopefully they'll be honest which may help in tracking down the fault.

Sounds like hydraulic tappets. I'd try an oil and filter change first myself, using the correct fully synthetic oil and genuine oil filter and see if that improves matters. If it doesn't I suspect it will need replacement tappets. There are plenty of posts on the subject. Use the forum search facility and take a look.
Good luck,
Ron
