Hello Everyone,
I'm a newbe,and just purchased a 206cc 2005 with a standard clarion cd/radio player with jbl speakers as standard.
The cd and speakers are great, but i would like to use my mp3 memory stick with mp3 files.
So,i wanna get a cd player with a usb port, but can i change the factory cd player for a usb one.
My car has the cd controls on the side stalk on the steering wheel,so can a new cd player be connected/still work with this side stalk thing? and does the cd player have to be a certain wattage for the existing speakers?
Thanks for any advice,
Clive.
Hi Clive,
Yes you can change the stereo fairly easily, there are a couple of things to be carefull of though:
1) the wiring loom on the 206cc has the "always on" and "switched" lives the wrong way round (red and yellow wires). This is a french thing, most after market stereos have bullet connectors on the red and yellow wires so you can swap them round. Plugging in the stereo without changing it shouldn't damage your stereo but you may find it behaves strangely - not turning off etc.
2) there are some online car audio retailers that sell stalk adapters for different cars and make of stereo, I've never looked into it on my CC but dependant on your stereo you will be able to do it.
3) You shouldn't be able to blow the speakers just by changing the head unit, most of them are rated at 4x50W which should be fine, though if you turn it up to 11 you will know about it.
Hope this helps, any other problems just come back.
Great, thanks Globetrotter,i will have a play with it when the weather eventually improves,(probably around end of April then ).
I noticed another post here that said only a sony cd player will work with the stalk system.I can't see why only sony have a compatable cd player for 206 cc cars, and no other manufacturer's cd player would work!?
Just been searching on ebay for a cd player and found a clarion the same make thats in my car at the mo!
Surely this would work with the stalk system?
Heres a link;
Worst case scenario i'll take it to a car stereo fitting shop, and get them to fit one.
All this techno talk,i think its time for a
Thanks again,
Regards,
Clive.
Go here: www.caraudiodirect.co.uk they sell a variety of head units as well as stalk adapter kits, you need to buy two parts, one dependant on your car, the other dependant on the head unit you have bought, but you will need to make sure the headunit you buy is compatible with steering wheel control systems.
Great, thanks.I see they do dvd players too! I might be tempted with one of those, but they need to be able to play my divx films, and mp3 files via front usb port from my memory stick drive.
I don't ask for much do i? hee hee,but you would think these options would be standard in this day and age.
It's the same problem with t.vs.You cannot find a t.v nowadays with a usb port fitted to it as standard,so you can put all ya films on one usb memory stick, takes it round ya mates, plug it straight into the t.v and select a film!
I still have to use a dvd player with a usb port in the front, just to watch my divx films, and thats if the dvd player can read them!
It kinda defeats the object of having divx films, when u have to go through a dvd player!
Dvds will be obsolete in about 10-15 years time,so wheres the all the technology promoters?! Divx is great when it works, and saves a great deal of storage space,no more shelves full of dvds!
Anywayz,enough ranting on..
Anyone who can put a list of car cd and or dvd players that are compatable with the steering wheel controls/stalk,will get a gold star.
Thanx,
Clive.
With Regard to Divx, have you had a look at some of the media players that firms such as Freecom make? they're essentially portable hard drives with scart sockets on the back and you can plug them directly into a TV. Alternatively, the Sony PS3 is now Divx certified so you can use Divx files on that.
I beleive that Pioneers DVD head unit (5000 series) is compatible with Divx, but it depends on which version I think, all my films are in 5 but they're now onto Divx7 so there may be issues relating to that. I had an old Pioneer AVH5700DVD which read Divx's from a DVD-R so it seems they would be going backards if the new pioneer DVD player didn't play Divx files. Best to check with Pioneer though.
Worth knowing that most DVD players in cars come with a cable that you are supposed to attach to the handbrake switch line so that the screen won't operate when the car is in motion, this is a legal requirement and on your head be it if you get caught driving along with a video playing :-P
