Can anyone help me please i am just about to have to authorise my local peugeot dealer to do £800+ work on a suspected tappet problem on my car, from reading around this site it appears that this might be a problem that peugeot are aware of.

If they are wrong about the tappets being the problem i will be faced with a huge labour bill to take it to bits and put it back together again!

Can anyone give me any advise that might help?

Thanks

it is a known problem. Had it on my car and it cost similar amount. Was such a bummer. What are your symptoms? If it is lumpy on startup (especially in damp/cold) but then gets better as the engine warms then it is very likely to be tappets. Also sometimes the antipollution/catallytic converter error light comes on. Also I think it only applys to 2.0litre cars but i'm not 100% sure

Thanks for replying.

Not really sure what the symptoms are was going down the A34 at about 70 when the engine autodiagnostic light came on, car seemed to lose power and started to run badly AA man diagosed multiple misfire. Peugoet put it on their diagnostic kit and came up with possible tappets, have had it cutting out on me when engine running but sat in traffic, firing up but not staying running and reving itself very recently so could all be part of the same thing.

I'm not happy that peugoet want to charge me at least £? in labour alone to take it all part when they don't seem sure that is the problem, i would have thought their equipment was clever enough to give a definate diagnosis

you need to speak to reap on here. I think the equipment should pick up a misfire on one of the cyllinders but not sure which one

my brakes are screaming and I only got the car last week - it is a 2002 but surely that cannot be right - I am told it might ease off but I have asked the dealer to look at it - I should not get charged if any work is carried out - should I?

tillyjet,
You should have stated a new thread/topic rather than hijacking this one.
However, welcome to the forum, and just bear it in mind in future please.
Did you buy it from the dealer then?

doesnt sound like the tappet fault to me,as prevoiusly stated it normaly causes poor starting, lumpy idle, anti poll light to come on,clears and drives o.k until next time it becomes cold.
never had them fail as customer was driving.?? sound more like a coil pack fault or injector not working correctly.
also ive had a few with cracked inlet manifolds that can cause the same fault as you described. should get them to check again :)

Thanks for your thoughts, the car is still with the garage but i will mention your suggestions to them and see if they have checked for and/or ruled any of them out already. Can't believe the sun has shone here evey day since it's been in the garage!!
