personnaly I think the marketting people for the fuel stations have done there job and made people beleive super market fuel is some how different to other fuel.

Well I ran one car on "branded" fuel and it ran sweet as a nut for >90k miles. I ran another on "supermarket" fuel and had all sorts of duff running problems for 40k miles. Maybe just a coincidence, but I'm now insisting that the wife runs the CC on branded stuff. It's not as if it's any dearer -- round our way the Shell and Texacos are the same price as Sainsburys and Tescos.

I used to run my other car on Texaco and it ran like a dream but the Texaco garages near me decided to start charging the earth- so I changed to Tescos and the car wouldn't start, wouldn't idle properly and wouldn't run properly.
Now I use Esso and it's fine, plus Esso is the cheapest garage for miles for me. Their Price Watch seems to set the price which the supermarket garages emulate.

I think Supermarket petrol IS different from branded, the same as supermarket frosted cornflakes aren't the same as Kellogs Frosties and supermarket lager is not the same as Stella...

The supermarkets buy the cheapest fuel they can get, which as we all know makes a difference to quality.
Just because you're paranoid, it don't mean they're not after you.

Well I've never had any trouble using supermarket fuel

Used to run my 306 diesel on Sainsburys City Diesel, low sulphur diesel. When the garage came to do the emissions test at the MOT, they had to calibrate the machine manually, as my emissions were so clean the machine wouldnt auto-calibrate.

It is fact that an 'Branded' refinery will sell fuel to off brand stations, thus you see sometime their tankers filling at these stations. However, it is not the same fuel that is in the tanks of a 'Branded' station. You see, the base fuel may be the same, but the additive package is completely different. In most cases, it is the additives that makes one grade of fuel better than others. It is also possible that the fuel being sold to off brand companies did not meet the quality control of the first company.
