We were told by the people who sold us the car that the 2nd smaller button was to deadlock the doors.

You press the 1st then the 2nd button striaght after.
But after a few mins the alarm just goes off.

If I only press the 1st button, it all locks and no alarm goes off.

Why do you think the alarm is going off when the 2nd button is pressed?

Assuming you are talking about a 206cc then the smaller button opens the car, the larger button locks and alarms the car. If you hit both buttons quickly then you are probably screwing up the sequence and maybe the locking mechanism.

Hmmm, maybe we are just locking and unlocking it
I can hear the lock make a locking noise again after I have pressed the smaller button which goes with what the old owners said.
But the alarm goes off, maybe it's too sensitive?

What year is your car, could be that you are both talking about different keys. My sis has a 51 reg and it has the old style peugeot key, my 52 has the new style one. The new one is more bulky and has a long button to lock and a small round button to unlock. They simplified the mechanism in the newer cars i think

This is the key, I'm pretty sure it locks the doors again and sets the alarm.
My alarm might have a ultra sonic detecter fault, seem comman on these cars.

John. My key is the same as yours, and a Y reg.

When I press the large button the locks click and indicator lights flash once, but the alarm is not set as the red light on the dash is not flashing showing that it's active. If I open the boot the alarm does not go off.

But when I press the large buton and straight away press the small button, you here the locks click twice and the indicator lights flash twice, the red light on the dash continualy flashes to show alarm is set. If I open the boot without re-pressing the small button on the key the alarm goes off.

Hope this helps.

Yep, that sounds right to me, cheers.

I have found out my alarm is tempramental, the ultrasonics, disabled (button near the steering wheel) it's fine.
