Creaking/Knocking

Hi guys im new to the forum as you can see.

I need some help, i have a y plate 206 cc 2.0 and its has a creaking knocking when changing in lower gears, but the noise is not consistant... i see alot of you peeps are complaining of the same or similiar thing... is there a cure?? or some possibles.. i have checked the anti roll bar links and engine mounts, but im thinking this may be a problem with the dual mass fly wheel ( if it has one ) however there is a little bit of play in the steering rack, not enough to fail an mot though. any help in this matter would be great as its driving me mad..

i also have this problem when pulling away in first gear i have to apply more pressure on the gas than i think is normal on other cars and lift the clutch slowly to stop it happening which is a pain at lights etc as it makes for a slow get away...reading the other comments i am thinking it may have something to do with the plate as every now and then my pedals go really stiff...
