Mine didnt go wrong in two years. Any car can go wrong it's just luck of the draw.
Try for an 04 onwards model as I think the problems were ironed out by then.
You should get a short dealer warranty so give the roof plenty of up and down for the first few weeks to test it out. If nothing goes wrong then it's doubtful it ever will.
Parkers will tell you what the price should be on any car you look at, just input the details - http://www.parkers.co.uk

I suspect that many problems with roofs are caused by mis-operation by owners, and sometimes by passengers. Follow the instructions in the manual to the letter and you shouldn't go wrong. Ours hasn't. Ours is an 05.
As for prices Dan's suggestion is a good one. Do bear in mind that the prices of convertibles peak in late spring and summer. The best time to buy to get best value for money would be late autumn and winter.

I was always afraid to say it, but I think you are spot on. I remember once reading how someone tried to crush a can with their roofUSER wrote:I suspect that many problems with roofs are caused by mis-operation by owners, and sometimes by passengers. The only thing I would suggest is when operating the roof do it whilst the engine is running and try not to open it or close it whilst on the move. Specifically not on bumpy roads.
I have a Y plate- One of the early troublesome models! Only trouble is I’ve never had a problem with the roof. I have always assumed that late 2001-2003 models may have issues due to the massive demand the CC had at the time and the fact that production line quality tends to get a bit dodgy when the throughput is stepped up. Hence if I were to avoid any years it would be these. That said the exhaust system is the only thing I would say was substandard on my car. Basically because it lasted 4 years and cost £350 to repair/replace!
