STOP RATTLE - Adjust roof latch (but how?)

Hi - can anyone advise me how to adjust a roof latch to increase the tension of the roof? The drivers side latch feels tight when engaged and makes a firm and strong connection. However the passenger side roof latch was always easier to close BUT NOW THERE IS A TERRIBLE "RATTLE / CREEK" coming from the passenger latch area when I go over bumps (it's fine on motorways).
The main dealer wants to mess with the seals etc. and I'm worried that if I take it in I might get a leak (and I'm leak free - see below). I'm convinced if I can tighten the passenger latch just 3mm or so it will be tight enough to prevent the rattle (the drivers side is perfect) CAN ANYONE HELP WITH THIS PLEASE?
HERE IS SOME NEWS YOU CAN USE
1) I've been leak free by using silicone gel in all the right places. The tube was half the size of a toothpaste tube and was £8 from my local plumbers merchants but was WELL WORTH the money.
2) I had an annoying squeak emitting from the dash area and I tried everything to fix it. Eventually I placed (more like wedged) some wood (painted black) under the central console to prevent it moving when the car was in motion and THIS WORKED FINE! I had almost taken the dash board to pieces but fixed it with some wood! PS: I did this about a year ago and the rattle from the passenger side roof area only started around Nov 05.
Any help regarding tightening roof latch really appreciated.

Hi!
I screwed the screw (pretty obvious;) that is visible when you release the latch. You need a specific kind of screwdriver that looks like a 5 point star. Tighten it really hard and the noise will go away
Worked for me. Did not come back yet, i think it was around 3 months ago...
Probably will loosen up again, but if it takes a long time it's worth it.
Pedro.

I tried the suggestion a moment ago. The result, I had more trouble than I first started. The darn screw wouldn't come out and the torx shape on the screw is out. I tried to unscrew it using a plier, no luck.
I guess I have no choice but to bring it to a workshop to sort it out. And I'll need new screws ! I hope they will not ask me to replace the latch.

how to stop the creaking in about 10 minutes
hi hope this helps i had excactly the same tried the above and the screw was stuck.
the best thing is to get some mole grips on the screw the pliers that lock and it will come loose then i bought a screw the same with a flat head and put that in , the screw is only to hold the plastic up anyway .
now for the latch it took me about 10 minutes and it never creaked again and that was two months ago first unclip the latch so the hooks are out then the plastic next to the wind shield( the window strut cream plastic ) unclip it you can take it all off if you want but i didnt then you will see three 10 mm bolts at the top that secure a cream colured plastic roof stop (its the plastic that is visable when the roof is down it has a hole in it and is square shaped, and the two little rubber cups press against it when the roof is shut .
then loosen the three bolts then the cream plastic stop will move , with the roof closed i moved the plastic forward about 3mm when you look at it you will see the rubber cups (on the latch above the hook) and the distance between the the plastic stop , i moved mine till there was about 3mm gap between the cups and the stop and the same on the other side then tighten them up again and hopefully it works it did for me .

for the screw i went to a do it yourself shop look for a screw with the same tread and similar head it doesnt have to be a torx head , i couldnt find the right length so i cut it down with a hack saw to the same length and worked fine .
if you put a screw in that is slightly longer the roof latch will not close fully so make sure it is the same length or a bit shorter but it will be easy to find good luck!!

Thanks guys. I found 2 screws, not exactly the same but it is okay for just holding the plastic cover. I did not try Boz suggestion yet. What I did was I applied silicone lubricant on the rubber last week. It lasted for half an hour. I'd reapplied the silicone lubricant again yesterday thinking I did not apply enough the first time. It was all good today and I'm gonna see if it will creak again tomorrow.pfradique wrote:Hi
Earthman, sorry to hear the complications...
I had no trouble tightening mine... and didn't hear a sound from the roof since.
Hope you can sort it out... good luck:)

Finally I tried out Boz's suggestion. The latch tension has increased. Squeaking sound down to minimum. It still squeak sa little when the car body flex between left and right but it no longer squeaks when going through speed bump. I guess that is the best it could get.
OK now down to the squeaking sound coming from the boot.
