I have a 2001 206 gti and it constantly 90+ degrees is this normal or should it be checked :?

Sounds OK. The cooling system is pressurised so your coolant shouldn't boil until well over 100 degrees Centigrade. Thermostats normally begin to open in the upper 80's, say around 87 degrees, and are fully open by 100 degrees.
