Know there have been several problems like this posted but mine seems different than most, so looking for advice.
I have a four and a half year old 1.6 206CC. The engine diagnostics (orange) light came on about 18 months ago and stayed on for about 3 months, then just went off again. About 9 months ago it came on again and has been on since.
A couple of weeks ago I was in an accident and the repairers thought that the light being on was as a result of the accident (was happy to let them try and fix it!), and when I got the car back at the weekend I was delighted to see that the light was off. This only lasted for twenty miles......then it was straight back on again. Apparently the repair garage had sent it to the local pug dealers to try to resolve the problem and they had eventually got it off but obviously not permanently.
Apart from the annoyance of the light being on (and the obvious inconvenience if I try to sell), I have not experienced any problems with the car itself. However, past experiences with pug dealers make me suspect that when the car goes for it's 60k service, the dealers will see the light, tell me the car is terminally ill and charge me a fortune to "fix" it.
Can anyone suggest how to approach the dealers about this when it goes in for a service?
Engine diagnostics warning light - always on

I was told that if its flashing then its a current fault...
If its constamtly on then its a stored fault code
If this is correct you probably have one of the common faults like a dodgy coil pack and each time they reset it and clear the code the fault re-occurs when the conditions apply (Usually damp conditions for mine.) but ultimately no-one has corrected the root cause of the problem.
As posted above, find out the code and them proportion blame accordingly, if in doubt then blame the garage anyway....

if the light is on ,the ecu has reistered a fault, even a stupid little "miss",you know, the one thayt happens every 46 zillion miles!! will be registered
ask the nice man if he will either code read it or switch the bloody thing off!! it takes seconds
if it has a fault tell me and get the part number

Hi all, recently bought a 2000, 1.4 206 for my son for christmas, as he as just passed his test i let him have it early. Had nothing but problems since getting it home, first the yellow engine managment light came on, the car was parked up and left to cool down. When restarted the light was off so thought all was ok. Next the car cut out on low revs but started straight back up again, then after a while it cut out and refused to start. The battery quickly drained of power so had to be brought home by AA. Took it to a local garage, when they tried to start it, it fired up first turn of key 'great' the ECU was checked but showed up no faults which confussed the mechanic, he told me to come straight back when the engine management light came back on. When i did this it registerd ECU faulty, so i had it changed but the problem carried on. The car had been fitted with what i can only call a rather loud stereo system and the speakers take up all the boot space and this was directly connected to the battery. Now i'm no mechanic but figured it could be the stereo that was draining the battery so in a fit of rage i disconnected the system from the battery. Since doing this i have had no problems with the car (24 hrs) but having read the posts on here i'm just waiting for it to start all over again. The garage was kind enough to take the ECU back off and put the old one back on as it wasnt the root cause, hows that for service.

Sounds as if you've got a good garage Doddy. You've also found out why the previous owner sold the car. I tend to leave my cars as original but I know that others add electrical accessories and change the lights to personalise their cars, only to find they create problems.
I hope your son enjoys reliability with his Christmas present from now on.
