More OAPs opt for 'topless' driving
A growing number of women in their 60s and 70s are splashing out on open-topped cars, a new report has revealed.

Research for AA Insurance showed that since last summer 54% more women in their late 60s and 40% more women in their early 70s own a convertible.

The number of "open-top OAPs" is also increasing among men, but at a slower rate, the study found.

By contrast, the number of younger people driving a convertible car has fallen, especially among women in their late 20s and men in their early 30s.

The research, based on the AA's one million car insurance customers, showed that the biggest increases in soft-top cars insured since last year were in the North East, Scotland and North West.

There was a "marked decline" in the South East.

Kevin Sinclair, managing director of AA Insurance, said: "Recent fine weather combined with easy access to competitive insurance quotes means you're increasingly likely to get a slick silver surfer enjoying an open-top convertible as you are a boy racer."

Seriously - unlikely!

If you have a look around how many cars do you see on the road 50 years old? cars have become just another throw away thing in our society, rather than something to be cared for and held onto for long periods of time.

It would be lovely to think that the car might last for 50 years if it were garaged and cared for lovingly, and chances are that it could potentially still be running in 50 years but as it gets sold further and further down the food chain it becomes more and more unlikely.

The only way I can see to manage to keep it going for all that time would be to keep it in the family, my motorcycle is now 10 years old and in perfect condition but I have no doubt that if I were to sell it then the next person would value it far less and so on until some headbanger throws it down the road at 80 mph and writes it off!

Enjoy it while you have it and hang on to it for as long as it gives you pleasure, thats what I tell the wife!!
