Hello
Please could I have some advice - I am at my witts end with this problem.
I have a Peugeot 206 1.4 GLX 5 door hatchback - 51 reg (Nov 2001)
About three weeks ago the engine started cutting-out when driving(complete loss of power, like a "stall" but when travelling, restarts immediately after, has happened at all speeds inlcuding up to 60mph, has done it abour 15-20 times now).
Took it into the dealership. Out of warranty (expired Jan this year). Think this is a known problem - both head office and the dealership admitted this to me. Also Watchgog investigation - see http://www.bbc.co.uk/watchdog/reports/t ... 1214.shtml. Peugeot agreed to pay for one hour of diagnostics during which the cut-out didn't occur.
They said to me that they identified a mis-fire - it was the receptionist who spoke to me and the tech wasn't available to speak to about it. I'm a bit dubious about this - I've never had it back-fire on me at all. Could it be an asymptomatic problem that needs fixing? It seems that this mis-fire problem is potentially a seperate issue to the cut-out. Anyway, they said this needs fixing for about £200 which I agreed to as it will need doing anyway I suppose. Also in this money they will replace the crank shaft sensor which they feel *might* be causing the cut-out problem. I've looked on the net about this and (although I don't know much about how cars work) it seems that a crank shaft sensor problem would cause problems starting the car (which I've never had) rather than just the isolated cut-outs I've had.
So essentially I'm paying for the repair (except they said they'll refund the crank sensor if it doesn't solve the problem of cut-outs). I fear the problem won't be solved. I'm terrified to drive the car.
What do people think the problem might be? ECU?
Have left message with BBC Watchdog will have to see what they say.
Advice please :-
a) I’m not convinced by their story of this misfire. Might it be an asymptomatic problem? I’ve never had it back-fire on me!!! The cynic in me thinks they’re just trying to get money out of me for a problem that isn’t there.
b) Could dysfunction of the crank sensor cause the cut-out problem? Fingers crossed it might as it would mean it may be solved.
c) If the problem persists when I get it back, what the hell should I do? I’m desperate. I daren’t go in the motorway, and feel I’m risking my life when I go on a dual carriageway at speed, and am risking an accident (thus NCB/insurance) whenever I drive the bloody thing.
Thanks so much everybody!

does the engine managment light come on?.does the car completly cut out,so as the ignition lights come on and you physically have to start the engine again?or does it fell down on power and a bit kangarooie and hesitant but may suddenly pick up and go again?
we have alot of probs with misfires on these cars causing similar problems
also on the same issue we also have adaption of air entering the manifold probs also which cause the same effects
in first case the fix is....bosch spark plugs, new coil pack(electrafill)not other type, install a screen wire (which means cutting a cable from coil pack to ecu),and clean the earth contact points(down by the headlamps)
second...will require a new throttle body(plastic butterfly wears causing fuel regulation probs (part number ends in p6)not other type.
soz cant help more but really hard to diagnos without looking at the car,or having a look at diagnostic report from planet.
if i can be of more help let me know.

Hi there,
Thanks for posting advice.
I'm not sure if there is an engine managment light on it, but the two lights on the right hand side (think these are the ignition lights) come on and the engine cuts out completely. Also the last time it did this it bleeped as well (i.e. like the bleep that tells u petrol running low), but this didn't happen the many other times previously.
I have to turn the key to restart the engine which, thankfully, it has done everytime ok. It is definetly not just a bit kangerooie - total loss of power!!! Bloody scary!
I think they have fitted new spark plugs and coil (and are charging me for this) - I was under the impression that this was kind of an incidental finding unreleated to the cut outs. They said that they'd replace the crank shaft sensor which was suggested to them to solve the problem.
Will have to keep fingers crossed that it is ready tomorrow and that the problem is solved. But I'm not holding my breath.
Would the garage let me look at the diagnostics report do you think?
Thanks everso much for your advice. What would we do without the internet!!???
Cheers

Hi,
I have W reg Peugeot 206 1.4 lx.......I too experience the same problem but the garage diagnostic show nothing so they don't care!
I care as this is dangerous and has left my partner and I in a few nasty situations.
can you give me some advice on how to get my garage to fix the ptoblem and how to get them to be able to indetify the issue.
I need to get it fixed!
I have also read tat once the ignition coil has damaged the ECU it will continue to happen until a new ECU is installed....can you tell me if this is the case.
I 'am also in NOTTS so if anyone could pint me in the direction of a Garage who can sort this cheap i would be over the moon!
cheers

My wife's 1.4 206LX has just starting suffering from this problem. It's a 99 T reg, happened 2 or 3 times to me today when I approached Junctions, very annoying! So is there a definite solution to this problem as it's the sort of thing that a lot of money could be thrown at trying to track down the problem! Or should we just get rid of the damn thing?
