At last I believe there is an answer for all of you out there who have been experiencing the sluggish acceleration on the 1.6 and the random display of fault messages, followed by a loss of power (only clearing when engine restarted)
After 10 months, 6 visits to the garage, a couple of letters to Peugeot UK and the replacing of various parts including a whole new ECU, apparently Peugeot have notified dealerships recently that some vehicles have got a cylinder head with valves which are a mm (or something like that ) too big thus making them stick. This would account for why on starting the car, in the lower gears I always felt like I was trying to accelerate through glue and why number 3 valve kept misfiring. Apparenly the misfire would then send the engine management system into confusion and in its efforts to counteract the problem, would then send either catalytic converter or anti pollution messages with then the ensuing loss of power. When the engine was restarted then it reset everything and it was like nothing had ever happened.
So my car has now got a completely new cylinder head with slimmer valves and .....(touch wood) it feels completely different, a much smoother drive, no sluggishness in accelerating. Of course I have only had it back a day so don't know for sure if this really is the long term answer and won't know for a good few months to come. I have had my hopes raised many times before, but I must say the garage seem more convinced this time that they have got to the root of the problem. :D :D
So for anyone out there with the same problem....get a new cylinder head.....it apparently cost Peugeot £1200 ....how sad?!! ;) [/quote][/b]

Hi im a 206 1.6 16v owner and i too had the same problem i get the car up to 3rd gear then car starts shaking engine light flashing and major loss in power after 5 mins with restarting the engine it clears and runs fine

took it to the garage they said its misfiring they changed the spark plus a week later it returned i threw the car back at them and then they said its must be the valves sticking as its misfiring in number 3 cylinder and ill need moddefied valves and quoted me 600 - 800 to change them so anyone else know anywhere that will do this kind of job alot cheaper.

Also does anyone know where i can get a workshop manual on this car cause haynes dont do a manual on this 16v engine as im thinking of changing the spark plugs to a better brand that reduces misfiring something like this by bosch http://www.106rallye.co.uk/sparkleads/i ... r4plug.jpg

I believe I recently had the above warranty work carried out on my 2002 1.6 as I told them about the problem of driving the car from cold and they said they had to replace the cylinder head and valves. Since the work the car does run alot smoother and there's no longer the problem of the car being sluggish from a cold start.

Guess sometimes they can get it right.

I bet they don't do a recall for this fault.

They should do a recall as the problem is a design flaw at the end of the day and as it started playin up when i reached 33k its out of warrenty now now i dont know what to do.

Did the cylinder head thing work?

My 1.6 seems to misfire at revs greater than 4000 (usually under heavy throttle), the engine warning light comes on and all power seems to drain (although the engine does not cut out). Restart always fixes but warning light stays on.

I had this problem before and the garage replaced the 'throttle position sensor' - seemed OK for a while but then, bang, it's back. Just had the garage look at it and they say it's the same fault!

They also replaced the spark plugs which again seemed fine for a while before the problem returned. Apparently they say that the Peugeot standard spark plugs are manufactured by Bosch?

Funny as when my 1.6 was sluggish I never got the engine warning light come on.

The engine does run abit smoother after the warranty work.
